My dad recently called me up because iPhoto was no longer launching automatically when his Sony DCS-P8 digital camera was plugged into the iMac G4 I gave him. In addition, when he launched iPhoto, it still did not see the camera. The memory stick, though, still showed up on the desktop. We went through all the normal checks (camera in the right mode, Image Capture set up to launch iPhoto, etc.), but everything seemed ok. I had him pull the images off the memory stick by hand and re-format the memory stick with the camera, and still no luck.
Finally he mentions to me that there is a CD in the drive that says something about "Boston Photos." Last time I was up there, I was planning on burning some of the pictures from a trip to Boston to a CD. I exported them and copied them to the CD, but forgot to burn it, so it was just sitting there waiting to be burned. I didn't think it should matter, but I told him to burn it and take it out. Once the CD was burned and ejected, iPhoto began seeing the camera again no problem. This is a very odd problem. I couldn't find any reference to this on any forums so hopefully this may help the next person that has to figure this out.
