Recover deleted mail in Entourage or Mail Apps
I discovered this by accident.

If you have the "leave mail on server for x days" option in Entourage or Mail then even if you delete the mail from your mailbox there is still another copy on the server. But how do you get it off the server without remembering how to login and all that stuff?

Just create a new duplicate account in your mail app. Name it something else but enter the same info for id, pop, password, etc. When you connect with that account it will assume all the emails are new and retrieve them again.

if you are using Mail, there is a folder for each account in ~/Library/Mail .
among other things, these folder contains a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded .

this is an XML file which can be opened in Property List Editor, an XML editor, or even an HTML editor or TextEdit.

by deleting an entry, you can make Mail download the message again.

the entries are in chronological order, and the date each message was downloaded is included.

delete as many as you want to be sure to get the message you need.

I use this to test mail filters, you can keep bringing the same messages through as you adjust the filters.

I have been told that tracking the downloaded messages is standard in the POP implemenation, so Entourage or any other mail program should have something similar.

In Entourage, you can also go to the menu, select Tools -> Accounts, and choose the account you need to get your message(s) from. On the Options pane, click the last checkbox "Allow online access". This creates a new icon in the Folder List window with the name of your online account. Clicking it will access to the mail account directly, and you can drag/drop the message back to your inbox.

Also, if you press "Get all messages left on server..." on the same Options pane of the account information window, then all messages will be retrieved from the server. This includes not only the message you accidentally deleted, but also a duplicate of any other message which is still on the server.

Any email app will download email that has been deleted from another email app, as long as the email app in which you deleted the email, doesn't have its option active for deleting email from the server after the user has read it or downloaded it, because each email app maintains its own database of which email it has downloaded from the server. Email stays on the server until the time you specify in your email app (never, or one day or longer).

Which reminds me of an only partially related issue: if an email app is displaying multiple copies of emails, it's usually because the database I refer to above, has become damaged, or the email app (usually Entourage) doesn't always know how to keep it up to date.
