Stream iTunes to multiple Airport Express units Apps
I came up with a novel way to get around the single-stream limitation of AirTunes, with a little help from Nicecast. I tried it with the two Airport Expresses (AXs) I have and it worked pretty well, although I got occasional but infrequent dropouts, mainly because I was doing everything wirelessly. It will probably work better on wired networks.

I used Panther's Fast User Switching feature and three user accounts:

  1. The first account was the playback account, where the music originated. I set up Nicecast to stream iTunes' output to port 8000 (the default). I then started a playlist playing.
  2. The second account handled streaming to the AX in my family room. I opened iTunes, selected my family room speakers, selected "Advanced>Open Stream...", and typed in "http://localhost:8000". The music started playing on my family room stereo.
  3. The third account handled streaming to the AX in my study. I followed the same steps as the second account except that I selected the speakers in my study. The music started playing there too!
The music wasn't completely in sync between AXs -- probably due to buffering -- but it played nonetheless.

Very creative idea. Maybe that's why Apple doesn't normallly support multiple AX streaming: music doesn't stay synced. I can see them working on it though as the AX does have a clock in it that is updateable by nntp. Not sure if that would be sufficiently precise, though, but it does imply that they might be able to get it to work later.

I'd love to be able to route other audio to an AirPort Express. It would be great if it could be a real audio output device.

You can. Just set up Nicecast to intercept the audio (it works with just about any app that uses audio) and stream it. Then, set up iTunes to play the stream through an Airport Express.

Nicecast allows you to "broadcast" RealPlayer stream (or anything else) over your LAN through itunes.

Here's how

I have a question on this subject: has anyone managed to find a way to output from itunes to your local computer as well as to an airport express at the same time? Have not been able to find any information about this-your conversation is the closest I have come to an answer.

I'm more interested in being able to stream different music to multiple Airports rather than to try to create a house-wide stereo. (listen to one stream in the family room, another in my daughter's room, another in my office, and so on - without having to have multiple computers If a general same-music "network" is wanted, then an actual building-wide stereo system needs to be installed.

To have different streams to different airport express stations, it seems like you can just adapt this hint to have multiple instances of iTunes for various Users simultaenously logged in via Fast User Switching.

Yes you can. It is a feature that is in there. For some goofy reason Apple does not give you access to it. Really annoying. The is an app called AirFoil that will allow you to do it though.
