Extract the Apple Remote Desktop 2.0 client installer Install
Apple Remote Desktop 2.0, just now shipping, is significantly slicker and more powerful than earlier versions, but with great power comes inconvenient installation issues: the admin requires that clients be updated to 2.0 as well, which can be done remotely from the admin console. However, Apple hasn't yet provided a downloadable ARD 2 client installer -- and if you're planning to install the client on a machine image or other locale, it would be nice to have one...

The contextual menu "Show Package Contents" comes to the rescue, as usual. The actual "Remote Desktop Client200.mpkg" client installer lives inside the Remote Desktop application package at /Contents -> Resources -> Installers; just control-click on the application and Show Package Contents, then navigate to the folder and option-drag the client installer to the desktop.

Um, maybe this is a little too easy and it was overlooked, but simply click "Create Client Installer..." in the ARD 2.0 file menu and it will save one to your desktop, no mucking around with package contents required.

Oh, and the advantage to doing it this way is that you are offered the option to costomize the client installer. Things like "Do you want to start Remote Desktop on the clients", "Should the Remote Desktop menu be shown?". You can also setup accounts that can use Remote Desktop. There really are several options you can setup, and it makes it really handy to install in other places cause a lot of stuff can be taken care of for you.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but there is a upgrade client software menu choice, and a change client settings menu choice. You can do it all with the remote desktop admin application. I don't see why you would bother doing it separately???

Well, i think the idea behind the menu option for creating a package installer is that you can customize the settings, create the package, then just push the package out to all your clients. When you have 50+, even 10+, configuring once, then pushing it out there is much more desireable than individually selecting and configuring. Even though you have the extra step of actually making the package. Either way, you are correct, you can simply select the clients you want to upgrade and upgrade them to the default ARD 2.0 install.

I've had to manually install the client on three of our 48 Macs from failures with the upgrade from 1.2.4 to 2.0. After the initial failure all other attempts failed with an error something like "can't replace the file..". If I was to do it all over again, I would extract the package and push it with ARD 1.2 and not rely on the "upgrade clients" feature of ARD2.

Ditto here.

I tried to use the update feature and it didn't work on any of the ~100 machines we have.

After using the Create Client Installer feature, we were then able to deploy the update without a hitch.
