A fix for annoying mplayer full-screen mode switch Apps
Up to now, I have been usin VideoLan Client (VLC) to view videos on my Mac. But I don't like VLC because keyboard control is too complicated. I really like MPlayer, because I can skip forward and backwards simply by pressing the cursor buttons. Unfortunately, MPlayer OS X always changes the screen resolution when switching to fullscreen mode, which takes several seconds during which you are without sound and video.

I downloaded the source and noticed that they linked the GUI to a hacked version of mplayer which had this behavior. I simply replaced their hacked-to-death mplayer with a self-compiled version of the original code from the project homepage, and compiled a nice OS X .app binary out of it. First tests on my own Macs and with friends indicate no side effects or additional bugs. You'll find my precompiled binary right here. Simply decompress the zip file and put in in the Application Folder. You'll probably need Mac OS X 10.3.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this recompiled version...]

Tested... seems to work fine! This was the issue that really turned me away from MPlayer, despite their claims of superior quality, etc - the waiting between resolution switches was a real pain. We'll see if I turn back to VLC after a week or so...

Nice work. However that GUI still takes up way too much of the CPU. When I ran it on my 1.33 it was consuming 40%-50%. Not sure what the original author of the GUI is doing in there but that is just crazy. mplayer on Linux is not even a blip on the radar.

appears to be working fine for me as well. mplayer is my video player of choice for mac, but the resolution change for full screen always bugged the hell out of me.

re drag n drop to the playlist not updating - it looks like you need to click the Stop button or any other button before the gui refreshes.

The GUI provided on the original post is the "old" v2.0b5.
I included the angelo's recompiled mplayer binary into the latest version available on the mplayerosx website, which is v2.0b7. That also fixed my previous problem with drag&drop to the playist.

You can find MPlayer OSX v2.0b7 with "fast fullscreen" right here (7.4MB).

and angelo, THANKS again ;-)

Anyway, thanks for the update, zenox.

Well, I do appreciate the resolution change because my iMac DV 400 can't handle some DivX at normal resolution. One thing that bugs me, though, is that the screen is displaced to the right efectively hiding about 1 or 2 cm of image. I thought about manually changing resolutions so that I could adjust the geometry prefs of the screen prefpane, but it does not seem to be 640x480 or 800x600, because if I manually access those my screen is perfectly centered.

Does anyone how to solve this?

Try setting the resolution manually and then use the fast-fullscreen enabled version of MPlayerOSX. This should do the trick.

Hide the dock first? You might have to hide it before opening MPlayer, I'm not sure.

If you use f instead of Command-f to switch to fullscreen this should not be neccesary.

Fantastic! This has been annoying me for months :)

Mail.appetizer's window appears on top of the fullscreen as well, which is handy.

unfortunately, a couple bugs i noticed:
- unable to resize the video window if width is set in preferences
- if using an s-video out, full-screen mode will not show on the s-video output.

Do you use Command-f or simply f to switch to fullscreen? Note that the focus must be on the movie window before you can press f.

The fast-fullscreen version of mplayerosx uses the quartz output driver instead of the sdl which kept switching screen resolutions. Quartz of course, is the native way to display video on OSX.

The fact that the video is not displayed on s-video out could indeed be a bug in mplayer's quartz output driver. Perhaps I should add a switch in the preferences panel to choose between sdl and quartz.

Then why don't you just go to VLC's preferences and change the shortcuts to what you like - I find VLC being extremely customizable...

This didn't work for me. I tried setting the shortcuts the way they are in mplayer, but it seems like the keyboard shortcuts always need the Command/Apple button. So to skip, i need to press Command-left instead of simpy left and so on.

I had the same problem, too, until I realized that the issue was that the arrow keys sans modifiers were already assigned to other functions in VLC (sorry, can't remember what). I tracked them down, changed them, and now it works fine! I'll try the recompiled MPlayer, too, since the resolution change annoyed me, but I'm pretty happy with VLC after having made these changes.

Resizing is broken in Beta 8 :-(

Also after upgrading to 10.3.5 I can no longer resize with mplayer correctly. The resized window does not show the full movie image, only part is shown. ideas?

OK, the NOW how do I get the new version to behave JUST LIKE BEFORE? My Mac is an iMac 400 so automatic resolution changing was a Very Good Idea™. Else my Mac cannot handle fullscreen playback.

Old MPlayer OS X cycled resolution modes by pressing F, but not anymore T_T
