A shutdown dialog shortcut for PC keyboards System
Can't remember seeing this anywhere, so here goes. After spilling a drink onto my keyboard (by mistake of course), I furiously mopped it up and in doing so, brought up the shutdown dialogue box. Nothing strange there you say ... well this is a PC PS/2 keyboard connected through a Belkin PS/2 / USB 4-port KVM.

I then tracked it down to the Scroll Lock key on the top row above the home key on mine. This may vary from keyboard to keyboard, depending on whether you have one of the flashy multimedia type keyboards with the multiple array of buttons.

not to be dense, but am I right that the poster is saying that their PC keyboards's scroll-lock key brings up the shutdown dialog? After pushing it just once, or multiple times?

(my belkin KVM is triggered by TWO presses of the scroll-lock key, which is why I ask)

Just trying to clarify, I find the original post a little unclear.

much to my chagrin, this is the case.

i have a belkin omniport 4pt usb kvm hooked to my b/w G3 400 running os9, and two dells.

a double-tap of scroll lock and a numeral (1-3 in my case) will switch to another machine--from the p.c.s.

from the mac, if i time it just right, the first tap brings up the shutdown dialog, and the second escapes out of it; then the numeral will switch to the chosen machine.

however, if i do *NOT* time it right, the first tap brings up the shutdown dialog, the second tap does nothing, the numeral switches to another machine, and when my dialog times out (ala okeydokey pro), my mac shuts down :(

needless to say, when i'm on the mac, i usually just reach down and hit the hardware button on the kvm to switch.

On more than one occasion -- when I have spilled coffee onto my keyboard -- I have instantly, automatically and intutitively hit Control-Z. Has yet to work. I'm not being silly; I really have. And I've shared the story with others who have said, "Me, too!" Gotta get a life...[/code]

I do that all of the time, in general life. Any time I do something wrong, I just [mentally] Cmd-Z it.

I once did an even better(?) thing. I'm a teacher, and get really used to using a whiteboard and markers to explain stuff, so I was explaining something to my girlfriend, and I took my whiteboard marker out of my pocket and looked for something to write on...

hi,

sorry for not making it clear.

I have a soho 4 port usb/ps2 with audio switch and as you rightly say the two quick presses of the scrolllock key does allow you to use the numeral key to switch devices.

a single press does bring up the shutdown box and then a subsequent double press of the scroll lock key does cause the kvm to beep, ready for numeric input.

sorry for not making it clear.

NicBav

p.s. I to just reach over for the kvm buttons myself!

I saw this hint, but would like to know the inverse.

How, on a PC keyboard, does one DISABLE this feature of
'scroll lock' initiating a shutdown dialog. I'm using a GoldTouch
ergo keyboard and the 'scroll lock' is just above the 'windows/apple-command'
key.

btw, my shutdown dialog appears after only ONE hit of the 'scroll lock' key.
