Create separators for Safari's Bookmarks bar

If you've customized the toolbars in Cocoa applications such as Apple Mail, you're probably familiar with the separator item that you can place on the toolbar to divide it into categories. It would be great to have a similar feature for the Safari Bookmarks Bar--and with a simple hack, the feature is there.

  1. Open a web page (any web page is fine).
  2. Choose Bookmarks -> Add Bookmark from the menu.
  3. In the name field, type a | (vertical bar/pipe character) and click Add.
  4. Choose Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks, view the Bookmarks Bar items, and edit the address of the bookmark you just added to read the following: javascript:0;
Your separator will now appear on the Bookmarks Bar but do nothing when clicked.

[robg adds: This is an improvement on an older hint, which didn't have the "do nothing" Javascript code. As noted in the previous hint, you'll give up the Command-1 through Command-9 shortcuts if you've got a bunch of divider bars on your bookmarks bar.]
