Force installation of Java 1.4.2 Install
Installing Java 1.4.2 would not work, and complained that I needed to install Java 1.4.1 first. Well, I had installed 1.4.1 and I tried a bunch of the solutions floating around (re-installing Apple's java.pkg, and several on this site) and nothing worked.

This is the trick that helped me install Java 1.4.2 with no errors from software update. I searched for and wide for this information so I thought I'd share it; it's adapted from a versiontracker comment.

Apple's Solution to 1.4.2 update over 1.4.1 problem ... AppleCare's advice is to find the directory QuickTimeJavaUpdate.pkg in /Library/Receipts/ and delete it. Java 1.4.2 will now update. It worked for me on two computers that suffered from this bug.

I had this problem, but hadn't been annoyed enough to look for a solution yet. This tip solved it for me. Thanks!

Not Exactly Apple's Solution

Apple's advice, located here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25788 Note that Apple does not advise you to delete the receipt package, but merely move it to the desktop (or wherever) temporarily, replacing it afterwards. You can replace the receipt package before the required reboot. I've done this on a few machines with no errors. I'm not sure if keeping the old receipt package is useful or not, but Apple seems to think so.

Receipt Usefulness

I believe that the receipt packages are used when Repair Permissions is invoked from Disk Util, no?

That's correct. Deleting receipts is almost always a Bad Idea(tm).

Thanks for the link to Apple's site! I guess some pertinent info got lost in translation. So, the upshot is, don't delete the .pkg just move it and when Java installs, replace it. Sorry if I led anyone astray and thanks guys for the clarifications!

Interestingly, I have this error, and went to follow Apple's advice, but don't actually have the QuicktimeJavaUpdate.pkg receipt on my system...how weird.

Force installation of Java 1.4.2

I don't think I had it either. I ended up downloading the stand alone installer, opening the package and editing the script file that controls the version checking so that it would pass the version check and install. (Of course I made a copy of the package and edited that.) All was well.

I too did not have the QuickTimeJava package. So I downloaded the Java1.4.2Update package, made a copy, edited the /Java142Update2.pkg/Contents/Resources/VolumeCheck perl script (by removing the whole DO_CHECKS: function) and I was able to reinstall and my java bus error problem was solved. Thanks for the direction.
