Reset Microsoft Office personalization and ID info Apps
A company called McGimpsey & Associates has published information regarding the remove of the Office ID for several versions of Microsoft Office. This is useful to anyone distributing licensed copies of Office in a campus or office environment, ie. as a custom Mac OS X .pkg.

Two files must be removed to clear the Office 2004 personalization:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Microsoft Office Settings (11)
  • /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/OfficePID
Remove those files and you'll be presented with a registration window next time you launch any Office app, allowing you to input a new name/key combo.

[robg adds: This hint does not explain how to pirate Office. When you remove these files and re-run any Office application, you'll get the registration dialog box again, allowing you to type in your name and serial number again. I actually had to go through this once at my previous job -- a user had typed their name incorrectly, and wanted to re-enter it correctly. I was thinking there would be an easier method, but in the end, we found and removed the above files. Note that the linked page also explains how to reset prior versions of Office, which have slightly different files.]

Does anyone know how to recover your serial number from an Office v. X installation? I have it installed on my PowerBook, but I foolishly misplaced my installation CD/booklet with my key. Is there anyway to get the key back?

Another foolish thing... I never registered the software with Microsoft, because I didn't want to sign up for a PassPort account. Looks like it might haunt me.

Surely using a publicly availible key is not a good idea. Once Microsoft is aware of them, they update the software so that it is no longer useable (They frequently do this with Office and Windows (Typically XP onwards) when they roll out a service pack.)

The server is up but the site is down and I don't know which direction you are trying to go

Kind of an Update to this Hint. When the hint was originally posted the OfficePID file was not ahidden file. At some point MS has made this a hidden file. If you can't find the OfficePID that is why.

Send Unix Command from ARD...

This works great with ARD and the Send Unix Command feature. Just save a template with the following single rm command...

rm ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Microsoft\ Office\ Settings\ \(11\) /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2004/Office/OfficePID

And use "Run command as..." current console user.
