iTunes Smart Playlists can cause slow app loading Apps
I recently reinstalled Panther on my shiny new 300GB hard drive. iTunes used to load all my songs (about 1,700 total) with one bounce. Soon after, it would take about seven to eight bounces to launch, with nothing else going on in the system.

After some experimenting, I figured out that it was caused by smart playlists. I had one for each of my soundtracks and albums (about 38), and two for my MP3s and AAC files. I turned these into regular playlists (I guess I will manually update the AAC/MP3 ones later on). After doing this for all my smart playlists, my iTunes returned to launching after one bounce.

I guess the Smart Playlists search your library on startup of iTunes and add the necessary files to them. So if you're like me and are really peeved about iTunes sudden lackluster performance, turn your smart playlists into regular ones for a speed bump.

I just hope that with this enhancement going on system-wide in Tiger that Apple revamps this so all our apps don't go boat slow.

[robg adds: I haven't noticed this problem, primarily because I use very few smart playlists, and I also tend to just leave iTunes running all the time. It only gets relaunched if I have to reboot for some reason.]

I can't see how this can be fixed. If you have 38 Smart Playlists with Live Updating, it's like running 38 mini applications. It's a matter of precessor usage, isn't it? Cut down on the Smart Playlists, or, unless you gotta have Live Updating, copy the Smart Playlists to new Plain Old playlists once they have been assembed.

i don't know if it's the smart playlists

i'm running 10.3.3 on a tibook 500 w/768 MB ram. i have a 40 GB hard drive. i have about 300 smart playlists and about 3400 total songs in iTunes. i've had no slowdown in iTunes launching...in fact, it started up this morning on one bounce!

rather than the smart playlists, could it be the size of your hard drive that's causing the slow down? or perhaps some other thing?

This problem can be fixed in an update to iTunes. They should load smart playlists in a separate thread.

But if they load them in applicationDidFinishLaunching instead of awakeFromNib, then you'd be upset about not having immediate access to your playlists because you'd have to sit and stare at iTunes while they load.

But anyway I don't see how this is newsworthy--you shouldn't even need to quit iTunes.

I have 11,000 songs and 20 smart lists (all live updating). I also mount my music from an NFS file server through a VPN connection via a wireless network. I'm not seeing this problem. I can't say iTunes launches fast (or how many bounces it takes as I've turned that off) but it's less than 20 seconds. At the rate your iTunes launched mine should take hours to launch.

Now iPod updates are REALLY slow but launch times are certainly acceptable.

Oh and yes all 11,000 tracks are legal.

I do the same. If I create a new SP, iTunes builds the list and that's it. I reboot only if it's absolutely necessary.

some see this, some don't, it can depend on how many "rules" are used in the smart playlist
the more complex the filtering, and the more files to sort through it will take longer to process.

I thought the smart playlists only did their live updating when clicked on, or something changed (new song added to main library, stuff like that)
to save on speed later it may do an initial calculation, and cache the results so it's faster later on.

(I checked, and in the User Library there isn't a Cache file/folder for iTunes, so a corrupted cache does not seem to be a possible cause)

try defragmenting if converting smart playlists doesn't work

I was experiencing really slow startup times for iTunes, something like 23 bounces in the dock. I have 2500 songs. I tried converting my smart playlists to regular ones and it didn't help. I also repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility and tried clearing cache files of other programs.

I have 2 identical hard drives, one of which runs as a backup using Carbon Copy Cloner. I ran Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk on the backup drive and booted into that drive. Now iTunes comes up in 2 bounces.

So if converting smart playlists doesn't work for you, try defragmenting your drive. I also highly recommend having 2 identical drives for avoiding the click of death and being able to easily run things like Norton without having to boot from a CD.
