I recently re-installed Panther on my shiny new 300GB hard drive. iTunes used to load all my songs ( about 1700 or so) with one bounce. Soon after, it would take about seven to eight bounces to launch, with nothing else going on in the system. I figured it out to be the smart playlists. I had one for each of my soundtracks and albums (about 38), and two for my MP3s and AAC files. I turned these into regular playlists (I guess I will manually update the AAC/MP3 ones later on). After doing this for all my playlists, my iTunes returned to launching after one bounce. I guess the Smart Playlists search your library on startup of iTunes, and add the necessary files to each playlist. So if you're like me and are really peeved about iTunes sudden lackluster performance, try turning your smart playlists into regular ones.

WHy would you need playlists for all your albums?

I have 10 smart playlists, 5 normal playlists, and 392 songs. iMac 500Mhz, G3....iTunes loads after 2 bounces.

Maybe you should try turning off the live updating feature of the smart playlists? Seems like every time you start up iTunes if it's trying to update 38 smart playlists that don't really need updating it would take a little time. Just a thought.

I turned off the automatic update for 10 smart lists. iTunes startup time shortened substantially.

Ah would that be it, the live updating? Ah.

And Jason, I have over 1700 songs. That would be another thing.

I have 1990 songs (mix of mp3/aac). 24 smart playlists (some complex, looking for text in comments, as well as other predicates etc), 3 non-smart playlists.

I don't see how you are having this problem. I'm guessing you have a slow hard drive or something else wrong. I would try backing up and replacing your library file, maybe it is corrupt. I have 1965 songs, 6+ days of play time, 12.37 gigs of songs (mostly MP3s, but a few AAC) strewn across 60 smart playlists and 7 normal playlists. iTunes opens in two bounces, on my sawtooth 400. Although the playlists seemed to be the problem in your case, they are not a constant problem. I would suggest a corrupt library file... if you moved all of your songs to a different hard drive, something could have been screwed up in the process. Back up prefs and (most importantly) your library, and replace them. If that doesn't work... well, perhaps it is a RAM or hard drive issue. Either not enough RAM to rip through the smart playlists, or hard drive seek time is horrible or something. I would say it isn't the hard drive, since I don't think mine spins up high enough to be searching for songs on launch.

I have +41,500 legal songs on iTunes, and never had a problem until updating to version 4.5. Then I bulit 3 smart playlist, now it takes about 20-30 sec. for iTunes to load upon opening. Also, it now takes forever to change info on an album that's already been uploaded. |
