A temporary fix for missing iPods/FW devices in 10.3.4 System
I've been experiencing the same iPod mounting problems as many users since updating to 10.3.4. Until that point, everything worked flawlessly. After the upgrade, I've experienced the same issue as has been reported on various sites -- the iPod would not show up anywhere. Today, since I've had similar intermittent problems with my external FireWire drive, I tried plugging the iPod into the 'extra' FireWire 400 port on my ADS external hardrive (after the external drive showed up on the desktop). Guess what? The iPod was immediately recognized and performed a sync with iTunes.

The problem definitely is related to the OS / Security update and the FireWire ports on the computer. I'm running a G5 DP 2.0 Ghz with 8 Gigs of RAM. If you're having similar troubles and have access to another FireWire port, give it a try...

A temporary fix for missing iPods/FW devices in 10.3.4

I have a problem where if I plug my iPod into a firewire hub with multiple firewire devices (external hd, video camera, iSight, computer, and not to mention my iPod) then my iPod will never mount again! I tried connecting my iPod to other computers and it doesn't mount either. I know it can't exactly be a problem with the hub because everything else works perfect. All that happens with iPod is that it charges. I also am tired experimenting because I have replaced my iPod with apple about 5 times now lol

Any suggestions?

The problem is that you are running out of Firewire bandwidth. Apple even has an article on this (somewhere). They mention that certain Firewire devices, such as cameras, can prevent the iPod from mounting.

You might try using a different Firewire port also.

After I noticed that it didn't work I disconnected it and directly connected it to my computer and still did not mount. I am running a Powerbook G4 867mhz on Panther if this helps so I do not have any extra firewire ports.

I noticed that my iPods died also when only having one devices (my external hard drive) connected to my firewire hub. I don't think that is too many devices?

I often have the same problem. I find it helps to quit iTunes before connecting the iPod.

I say thanks to you all because reading of your problems mounting iPod i solved my problem.
Got an iMac G3 600 blue dalmatian and after the OS/Security update it begun to get harder to mount my iPod 3G 40Gb, often it was mounting really slowly, so i tried quitting iTunes, and also restarting my iMac, but the problem was there anymore and get bigger too, now my poor iPod was not mounting at all! I was trying for a week, every day, but nothing.
After the OS update I noticed that my unibrain firewire web cam had always the "in use" red led lighten on, also when not in use, (before the led was green when not in use, red when in use) but I gave not importance to that thing... Now unplugging the web cam my iPod mounts correctly every time!
It may be really a problem of firewire bandwidth, or some incompatiblity with some firewire products not directly supported by Apple... I dont use any hub, iPod and cam are on different ports.
