Use different mailbox icon in Mail Apps
By accident I found out that when I login with the default English language, the icon for mailboxes in Mail looks much nicer than in foreign languages. If you want to have a look or to change it, go to Mail (Control-click and select Show Package Contents) -> Contents -> Resources -> mailbox.tiff.

There is another icon there only for the English one -- a file named mailbox_en.tiff. To change your view, rename the original mailbox.tiff to mailbox.tiff.old, make a copy of mailbox_en.tiff and rename it to mailbox.tiff. Restart Mail and then you will have the original amerikan mailbox.

[robg adds: I only run US English, but I have the mailbox.tiff icon in my drawer view; copying and renaming as above didn't have any effect on the displayed icon for me.]

As Rob noted, Americans also have the "flat bin" mailbox. Mailbox_en is actually used in the toolbar (control+click Mail's toolbar, select "Customize toolbar...", and you'll see the Mailbox_en icon to the left side). I don't know what "en" stands for, but apparently not English. ;-)

No, it looks like _en does stand for English. If you set your primary language to Japanese, or French, or German, and then launch Mail, the mailbox toolbar icon will be the flat in-box.

You can change your primary language on the fly in the International preferences.

Right, and I think there is a obvious reason for the different icons. The 'English' mailbox_en.tiff icon shows a typical American mailbox that is not seen in other parts of the world. Living in the Netherlands I will stick to the more neutral mailbox.tiff icon.

I think he meant "English" as in "from England".

Anyway, my primary language is US English, but Mail displays the "flat bin" mailbox in the side drawer.

Help! I tried to change my default language to German so I could try this. Then, I cannot open ANYTHING
Only Safari opens. Terminal doesnt open windows, Finder crashes, Mail crashes, etc. System Prefs (so I can change it back to English) will open, but won't open the system prefs window. And, I can't read too much German!!! Please help me. I can boot into Single User Mode, but that's about all I can do besides use Safari. Thanks in advance!!

Looks like, that your permissions are mixed up. Try to start from the Install-CD or -DVD and repair the permissions. And while you are there, repair the disk as well. When finished, restart Then go to Apple>Systemeinstellungen>Landeseinstellungen>Sprachen and move your language back to top. Hopefully this helps.
