A quick fix for disappearing Stickies windows/notes Apps
Recently I wanted to return to using Stickies again. However, when I went to create a new note, it opened in the collapsed state. Selecting deminimize from the Window menu caused it to disappear! I could still type and save the note, but its graphical representation was nowhere to be found.

After much fretting and using every menu/window button combination I could think of, I decided to trash the preference file (com.apple.Stickies.plist in your user's Library/Preferences folder). I backed up the existing notes first (these functioned normally), since I was not sure where their data was stored. After trashing the preference file, everything worked fine.

I'd guess the note was somewhere off-screen, and that trashing the preferences caused it to return to its default position. I get this sort of effect quite frequently with my powerbook because I move it between different screens.

The other option is to use my shareware app, Sticky Notes: http://www.randomsequence.com/Projects/Sticky%20Notes/ If you find problems with it fixes are normally produced within days rather than the months / years between Apple's Stickies updates -mrwalker

How about...

Anyone know how to prevent Stickies from creating a new blank note everytime it runs? I have Stickes launch at Startup and every few weeks I've got a handful of blank Stickies I have to manually delete. (Stickies is impervious to AppleScript.)

Stickies was generating a new note on startup only when I had the "Hide" feature checked in the Login Items pane. Unchecking it seemed to prevent a new note from opening (but I haven't checked under 10.3.4).

This problem appeared since 10.3 exist. Very disapointing. I never got this problem since Stickies exist (before OS X). I found no fix for this problems. I hoped after the first update of Panther to see this problem fix but nothing. Each new update of Mac OS X 10.3 I hope to see this problem fix but I think this will never happen. I tried to use Stickies of Jaguar but this not work with Panther, the app refuse to open. :(

An even quicker way.

Apple has an inadequate support article about this issue that suggests you use "Arrange in Front," which I have failed to find in Stickies 4.2

The quickest way I've found to recovering off-screen stickies is to briefly reduce the screen resolution. I do this using the Displays menu bar item, which you can activate in System Preferences.
