Recover a lost iPod's serial number System
Recently the unthinkable happened, I lost my iPod! Then I realized I never wrote down the serial number and therefore couldn't file a proper police report. Well, I knew that iTunes was able to recognize my particular iPod, so the serial number must be stored somewhere on the Mac. It is! To find your iPod's serial number, navigate to your home directory and then into the Library -> Preferences. From there, open com.apple.iPod.plist with OmniOutliner and then look under the Devices heading. You will see a long string; click that and you will find all the details of your iPod, including the serial number!

[robg adds: You don't need Omni Outliner for this, of course -- any text editor will work, as will Property List Editor, which is part of the XCode / Developer Tools installation. Unfortunately, I imagine the odds of recovering a lost iPod are roughly zero, but at least this way you can file a police report. There's some other interesting items in the file, such as the date of the last iPod connection.]

a tip to slightly increase the chance of retrieving a lost iPod...
Authored by: baronworm on Jun 01, '04 11:58:01AM
I have owned several iPods since they first hit the market, but thankfully I've never lost one. I've only given my old ones to family, or sold them on eBay, to feed my compulsion to get the latest and greatest. :-)

My latest iPod (a mini) was the first time I tried an idea of mine.... I engraved the ipod with the following:
reward if found.
email ipod_found@yahoo.com
(after first making sure that the "ipod_found" email address was available at mail.yahoo.com)

So now, if I do happen to lose my mini, I can keep an eye on that yahoo email account and maybe I'll get lucky and get it back! The fact that it's a yahoo address - instead of my personal email - means that the email address can be transferred to someone else if I ever pass this mini on to a new owner.

Good thinking, Baron, esp. about the yahoo account. You'll have to "bump" that email account now & then, to keep it alive, but, hey, I like the way you're thinking.

I used lostipods.com, my girlfriend actually lost hers and someone returned it through the site. It's cool cause you don't need to maintain an email and you can remain anonymous, you can even post reward info. The person who finds it can return it anonymously too, which is what the person who found mine did... i think they stole it and couldn't figure out how to put songs on it so they decided to get the reward.lol

Oh well, at least we got it back!

a tip to slightly increase the chance of retrieving a lost iPod...
Authored by: srashi01 on Jan 06, '05 03:30:19PM

Hello, all. I've recently found an iPod. Actually, my dad found it while driving his taxi but he asked if there was any way to return it. I searched around and found lostipods.com but they don't have this particular serial number registered. I was wondering what else I could do to try and find the person who lost this iPod? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wow, it's really cool to find out that Omni Outliner can read .plist files! Too bad it can't save them properly, at least with version 2.2.6. It insists on appending .ooutline to the filename. I have no idea if it saves it in the correct .plist format behind the scenes, however.

OmniOutliner and Plist Files

No, it doesn't save it in the right plist format. However, OmniOutliner's format is an XML Property List, but it just gives you the column color and assorted junk. But is kind of interesting to look at.

One thing I have found very useful is Lost-iPod.com for my son's Nano 4g keeps track of the serial number in my own account. Since the identity kit that comes with the account gives me instructions and a registration card, I always have a hard backup I can look for.
