Generate Play Sound scripts for Entourage (or Mail) Apps
Can you believe that MS Entourage 2004 still cannot play select System Sounds found in System -> Library -> Sounds or ~Library -> Sounds without the assistance of a third party app and an AppleScript for each and every sound? If you're like me, you've got hundreds of available System Sounds, and you get really, really tired of making a new 'Play Sound' script for each sound you want to use in Entourage (or Mail).

The following script is designed for Entourage, but can easily be adapted for use in Mail. It has only been tested in OS X 10.3.3 Panther and Entourage X, but it should work in older versions; the key is that you have the scriptable Script Editor and the Play Sound application.

Download the compiled script here.

[robg adds: Due to the length of the script, I haven't included the source here. However, I've also mirrored the file on the macosxhints.com server. Instructions for using the script are included in the comments at the beginning of the script. I haven't tested this one.]

Generate Play Sound scripts for Entourage (or Mail)

Mail has no trouble playing sounds from /System/Library/Sounds.

True enough, it's considered bad form to mess with anything in /System, but I've done it since the first incarnation of Mac OS X w/o any problems.

Yes, Mail will play default System Sounds in AIFF format; but, last I checked it could not play AIF (note the lack of a second 'F'), MP3, SND, WAV, et al. This script can be modified to generate a script to play any sound type that Play Sound can play, and thus allow any other program that can trigger an AppleScript to play any such sound.

If I'm wrong about Mail and other file types, then, yes, this script is of no use to Mail users.

I have sounds in wav format inside ~/Library/Sounds...they seem selectable in mail preferences. extension is ".wav".

Entourage Rules will play an Applescript Application. Make a little script to do whatever, sounds, action, say...

Ummm... yes, this is what this hint/script is for; it automates the task of making an individual script to play a particular sound, presumably for use with Rules. It's no fun making a custom script for ten sounds, let alone fifty, one hundred, two hundred or more. This script does all the work for you, and puts the scripts in an appropriate place for easy access by Rules.
