Display Mail's mailbox sizes in the status bar Apps
I have been looking for a way of seeing the exact size of a mailbox (or its subfolders) in Mail.app, but wasn't able to do so until I choose to view the "Size" column in my Viewer Window (View -> Columns -> Size). Once that column appeared, the size for the entire mailbox appeared next to the Total number of messages in the Status Bar (you will have to choose View -> Show the Status Bar if you have it hidden).

Subsequent clicks on subfolders proved this also listed their sizes as well ... and selecting several mailboxes/subfolders at once listed a combined size for all selected.

[robg adds: I've had the Size column active for so long, I didn't realize that if you hide the column, you also lose the total mailbox size information from the status row...]

Display Mail's mailbox sizes in the status bar

I just put OS X Leopard in my G4 iMAC and am now using Mail (Version 3.2).

I, too, want to be able to view the total size of the mailboxes (which was visible using my old System 10.3.8, with an older version of Mail).

I tried to implement your "fix" (I see the total number of messages; and, I also can view the size of each message in the "size" column) however, did not see the "Display Status Bar" under the "View" drop-down menu.

How can I enable the system to display the total size of mail boxes, etc.?

On a somewhat related issue... In my old Mail app, when I would click the icon "Get Mail," I would see a "swirling wheel," indicating the the app is searching and/or downloading new mail. In this new version of Mail, I don't see any such "activity" indicator. Instead, I only hear a beep when the process is completed. This is very inconvenient, since, I never know if there is something happening, etc. Is there any way to enable the Mail app to display this dynamic icon?

Thank you, and, I'm so glad that your service exists!!

You have to enable (open) Activity Viewer (under the WINDOW menu, I think, I"m not in front of my OS 10.5 right now).
Instead of having a floating window, you will see it at the bottom left corner of Mail, just like the "Now Playing" window in iTunes.

Dear morespace54,

Thank you so much for your rapid reply! The "Activity" window is a separate one, and, does indeed, show the functionality I was hoping to find. However, is there a way to integrate this dynamic info into the body of the full mail display? The "iTunes-like" activity monitor in the lower left-hand corner, for some reason, does NOT show the "search for new mail" real-time info as does the floating window.

Also, do you know of a way to enable the display bar to show the total size of the given mailbox?

Again, thank you so much for your time and info!! This is a wonderful service, and, I'm glad that you took the time to help me!

Sincerely,
DR10TU4
