German (language) affiliated site now online... Press Rel
For the German-reading crowd out there, I'm pleased to announce that macosxhints.ch is now online. They actually launched a week or so ago, and I've been a bit lax in getting the news out (sorry, guys!).

macosxhints.ch features a collection of the best of the Panther hints from macosxhints.com, all translated into German. Going forward, there will be additional hints, both new to the German site as well as those translated from macosxhints.com. I'd love to take some credit for the work on the site, but really, I can't -- Rasim Cakir and his team have done a great job pulling and compiling the older Panther hints and trying to keep up with the newer ones. They had over 900 new users register in the first three days the site was up, so there's clearly an interest in the German version of these pages.

The US site will always have the new hints first, given the time required to translate each hint into German. There's also not necessarily a one-to-one match between hints on the two sites -- the German site may not run every hint from the main site, as it's up to Rasim and his crew to pick and choose which hints they'd like to publish.

Although I've granted permission for macosxhints.ch to use some of the content from the main site, that's about the extent of my involvement with the German pages -- it's really Rasim and his team that are making this happen. I provide each day's hints, and they decide what to do with them. There's a cooperative, non-financial relationship between the two sites, so hopefully we'll be seeing some original German hints translated back into English for the main site.

Welcome, macosxhints.ch!

The new site, while being published in the German language, is actually Swiss, not German. It's a German-language site, but not a German site.

I wondered why Rob said German (.de) when the link was Swiss (.ch).

Maybe because with "German" the language of the website is meant and not the country...?

He said German-speaking. But yes, my first thought was .de and not .ch.

It's proper to call it a German site when you are referring to the language, much like you might call this the English site, not meaning it's British. He does refer to this site as the "US" site, though, which might lead one to think he means German nationality, not German language. The top-level domain of .ch gives it away, but I think we can all find common ground here.

Auf jeden Fall ist es hervorragend, dass wir jetzt eine deutsche Version von Mac OS X Hints haben!

(In any case, it's awesome that we now have a German version of Mac OS X Hints!)

Can we get their site design backported to the english site? It's very well done (although I'm not much for the logo...)

This is awesome. I just recently started learning German so this is a big deal to me as I can now totally immerse myself in German. I switched my OSX language to German and am one by one finding German alternatives to the websites I visit. This is one more step in my learning process =)

I really like the way the German/Swiss site is designed, minus the logo. I kind of like it better than the look of the English/American one IMHO.

Let me just suggest that the opinions on the site design are not unanimous: I really dislike the way the Swiss (German) site looks. There isn't enough color contrast for my eyes, and the "metallic/machine" font of the text at the top banner is hard to read. If it were put to a vote, I'd cast mine (early and often!) to keep the current look.

It would be nice if MOXH were "skinnable" (one "n" or two??) in a CSS kinda way, but between having Rob spend time publishing hints, and spending time mucking around with the interface, I'd hope he'd choose the former. Others may feel differently, of course.

The original site (this one) is skinnable. If you're a registered user, which you have to be to post a comment :), then just click Display Preferences and you can choose from one of four...
