Restore Address Book data without a backup Apps
This pertains to OS X Address book on 10.3.3, but I would suspect that it works on others. I also believe you have to have iSync installed. The reason you would do this is because you overwrote your Address Book while trying to sync your Palm device or etc. Here's what to do.

Change to your user's Library -> Application Support -> SyncService -> LastSync Data -> Address Book folder. In the Terminal, that would be cd Library/Application Support/SyncService/LastSync Data/AddressBook/. Then copy the AddressBook.data.previous file to your user's Library -> Application Support -> Address Book folder, and then rename it AddressBook.data. Again, using the Terminal this would be:
 cp AddressBook.data.previous ../../../AddressBook/AddressBook.data
Restart Address Book and you should be ok. It appears that (or at least diff thinks so) AddressBook.data and AddressBook.previous were identical on my machine in the LastSync folder and either could be used (so long as you rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data). Your results may vary.

This also may assist only to the point of you restoring your Address Book up the point at which you last synched your device. For those of us with iPods or Palm devices, this is probably fairly often.

Wouldn't it be easier to open AddressBook.app and use File -> Back Up Database (or Revert to Database Backup)?

I recently had the opposite problem: after adding a number of addresses to my Palm, syncing with my Mac overwrote them with the old address book database from the Mac. Grrr.... Any idea how to undo that unfortunate situation, should it happen again? (And some of those addresses were lost for good....)

Thanks for the tip.
I just got my Address Book hosed after syncing with my mobile phone. So much so that I couldn't even open Address Book without getting the spinning technicolour pizza.

a Google or too revealed <a href='http://www.hawkwings.net/2006/11/07/address-book-wipeout-mac-support-saga-fix/'> this article</a> which linked here.

I was bit worried at first as the article mentioned 10.3 & iSync, and I'm running 10.4.9.
after a bit of searching I found that under user dir/Library/Application Support/Address Book

the two files "AddressBook.data" & "AddressBook.data.previous"..
in which case I simply renamed "AddressBook.data" to "AddressBook.data.x" & dropped the ".previous" extension on the other one.

The other cool thing for anybody panicking about how far back the ".previous" file is.. it seems to be at last edit. Ie. The last time you saved after editing a single contact.

Hi everyone,

I am not able to follow this for some reason, when i go to the mentioned path i dont have the address book folder, i have only the package Local in the SyncServices folder

What i did is hooked up to itunes my new iphone to which i previously added contacts and the itunes asked if I want to use my settings from my old phone. now messages are gone, contacts are gone and no back was created on my new phone. However when i go search for a contact of sms i get the result but when i click on the message it comes up with something totally different.

Hope someone can advise me on this.

Thanks and regards,
