Open Safari Google contextual searches in new tabs Web Browsers
Command-Control clicking on highlighted text in a Safari window will bring up the standard contextual menu. However, when the "Google Search" item is selected from the menu, the results open in a new tab, unlike the regular Control-click menu item.

This is useful for performing searches without requiring typing, or leaving the current page. Note that one does not need to continue holding Command or Control when the menu comes up, the keys only have to be held when clicking on highlighted text.

While testing out this hint, I discovered ctrl+opt+clicking saves the Google search page to your harddrive...interesting.

All of these actions are related to standard shortcuts in Safari. Open Safari's Preferences and select the "Tabs" icon. You will see all click-shortcuts there for when you click on any link. These also work when you select Google Search from the command-click menu.

All of them except ctrl-option-clicking, of course.

Excellent!

I should have tried it...

Why are the OS X shortcuts so badly documented?

Shortcuts are not badly documentet, you just need to press Shift-Cmd-Alt-F7 to find out.

And cmd-ctrl-SHIFT-click opens it in a new tab in the background.

I am not sure if I am misreading this hint or not, but I thought I would share my method. When I want to do a google search I press cmd-L, tab, type my search text, and then I hold down the cmd button when pressing return.

A new tab opens up, but the current tab stays in focus. I do not have 'select new tabs when they are created' in my preferences. When I am ready to look at the search results, cmd-shift-right arrow gets me there.

Mouse-free and proud of it.

Hope this helps.

It would not open in a background tab if you do not have that option clicked (unless you hold the shift modifier as well. which will reverse your behavior). Also, hitting Apple-Option-F will bring you directly to the Google Search field, rather than having to tab over to it.

I wish the default behavior was to open a new tab for Google searches, rather than having to hold down the command key. Anyone know if there's a way to make that the default behavior?
