Enable full printer features on AGFA AccuSet 1000 System
The original AGFA AccuSet 1000 PPDs are broken under OS X. To prove this, select Print and go to Printer Features. The settings that are available in OS 9 don't show up in OS X. This is because the original PPDs don't have the correct closing tags for each printer feature, so OS X won't display them. I've added the tags and updated the PPD's to work in OS X. There are two versions, one to handle Adobe Illustrator page orientation correctly and a standard PPD (these PPDs are being used with Viper RIP PostScrip level 2).

Download the PPDs here:
http://www.bndco.com/tips/OSX_AccuSet_PPDs.zip

Unzip the file and put them in the PPD folder in /Library -> Printers -> PPDs. Add the printer with the Printer Utility application. Select "Other ..." and choose the correct PPD.

[robg adds: I don't have an AGFA, so I can't test these new PPDs. Also, if AGFA asks I will have to remove the link, as these PPD files are under their copyright. However, I'm hoping that the company won't mind that someone cleaned up the files to make them work better under OS X.]

Wow! Just what we needed! We have an Accuset 1400 Plus with built-in Star 400 RIP, and since switching to OS X we have had to set up the image setter as a generic postscript printer. It worked okay with Quark 6, but InDesign wouldn't print properly to it.

The last updated PPD posted by Agfa was to fix a bug when using the imagesetter with Quark 4. Agfa said the bug was with Quark, and of course Quark said it was Agfa. I realized the fact it wouldn't work with OS X meant it was a problem with the PPD file after all.

We have a very large image setter that we use with a Rampage RIP, but we still use the Accuset for small jobs. We were afraid we would have to stop using the Accuset after all our Macs went to OS X, but this has saved the day!

This works great! Thanks!

I've updated the PPDs again to provide the same options that are available using OS9. For some reason many options were disbled using OSX.

There is an additional problem between the Viper RIP / AGFA AccuSet 1000 and Adobe software products that no amount of PPD editing will fix. InDesign, IllustratorCS (probably all version back to ver. 9) use some sort of voodoo code related to transparency features that will break older versions of PostScript 2 hardware. Even though Adobe states that PS 2 is supported. The Viper RIP happens to be one of those devices that has an old version of PS2. The only work-around seems to be to print to PostSript, distill it to Acrobat vers. 1.3 and print (separations) with Acrobat Pro. Not tested, but this is what an Adobe tech. mentioned as a work-around.
