Access AOL email via IMAP in mail clients Internet
For this of you who didn't know, as of today AOL has opened its mail system to IMAP access. just use imap.aol.com (inbound) and smtp.aol.com (outbound) from Mail (or your preferred IMAP-capable email client) and you're all set.

[robg adds: This is good news for me, as it means I can finally remove the AOL software from my wife's machine -- reading her email is the only reason we have it installed...]

Thanks for the tip! Now all my email can be handled by Mail.

Just one detail I can't seem to get past: now that all my email is in Mail, how do I delete it from AOL? Basically, I want it to act like a POP server; once I have it on my computer, I don't need it on AOL's computer.

Has anyone been able to get outgoing mail to work. I'm getting the following error:
----------------------
The SMTP server "smtp.aol.com" rejected the password for user "_____"
----------------------

The password is the same that I used for incoming mail, so I don't know what the problem would be.

Works for me in Entourage. I just had to turn on "smtp server requires authentication".

It also works in Outlook Express for PC according to a site I found through Google. Does anyone know if these apps have different default settings for port numbers / authentication types?

When Microsoft asks you, "Where do you want to go today?" tell them "Apple."

I do not use AOL, so this is pure speculation ...

Some dial-up services do not allow access to their SMTP servers unless the user is connected via dial-up (i.e., has a local IP address). I use Earthlink dial-up, but I cannot access their SMTP server from my office Ethernet. I have to use either Postfix on my Mac or my university's SMTP server to send a message "from" my Earthlink account. Could AOL be configured the same way?

-Mark

I can't check this while I am at work, but your hypothisys sounds correct.

AOL forces you to be logged in with thier client before you can FTP to the members.aol.com area (Which is the place where an AOL customer's web site is stored)

It could very well be something like this, however as for your Earthlink problem (even though this is slightly off topic - although AOL might have a similar setup) use smtpauth.earthlink.net instead of smtp.earthlink.net when you are accessing Earthlink email while not connected to Earthlink via dial-up or Earthlink highspeed.

I'm getting the same message.

What type of authentication is needed?
In mail.app, there is the option of password, MD5, kerberos v5 and kerberos v4.

Also, for the username you need to include the @aol.com part (at least for the incoming side) I would assume you need to do the same for the smtp side.

As a short term solution, if you have another SMTP server that does not require authentication, you can have mail.app use that server as the default for sending mail and still use the imap to recieve.

Can anyone translate this to Mail.app speak for me? I thought I was pretty sharp, but I couldn't get it to send through AOLs servers. I can receive.

"The server response was: CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH."

I don't have AOL soft on my machine, so I look at this as a way to check an old account more easily (still active on the family's old account, although I moved from AOL years back now).

I found the following link that describes the setup. http://help.channels.aol.com/article.adp?catId=1&sCId=416&sSCId=4093&articleId=217449 It mentions that the port that needs to be used for the smtp server (smtp.aol.com) is 587 and not the usual port of 25. I've made this change but still cannot send via the smtp server - but perhaps this will fix the problem for someone else.

Regarding the send problem some have experienced. I tested 3 imap clients on my system.
  • Entourage works :)
  • Thunderbird works :)
  • Mail.app does not work :(

Currently, AOL's SMTP server doesn't work with Mail.app because AOL's server is not using PLAIN authentication when Mail.app wants to use LOGIN authentication. There's a topic going on this on USENET, see http://tinyurl.com/3hkqf.

I've called AOL Beta Support at 877-320-4732 and reported this as an official bug, and I'd encourage anyone else to do so if they're an AOL Beta Tester.

Not an AOL Beta Tester? Just sign up, it doesn't cost anything. Or call AOL Mac Support at 888-265-8007 and report it as a bug.

For now, you can use Entourage, Mozilla, Outlook, or Eudora. Or AOL Communicator. But not mail.app. Sad, really. :-)
