For this of you who didn't know, as of today AOL has opened its mail system to IMAP access. just use imap.aol.com (inbound) and smtp.aol.com (outbound) from Mail (or your preferred IMAP-capable email client) and you're all set.

Thanks for the tip! Now all my email can be handled by Mail.
Access AOL email via IMAP in mail clients
Has anyone been able to get outgoing mail to work. I'm getting the following error:
Access AOL email via IMAP in mail clients
Works for me in Entourage. I just had to turn on "smtp server requires authentication".
Access AOL email via IMAP in mail clients
It also works in Outlook Express for PC according to a site I found through Google. Does anyone know if these apps have different default settings for port numbers / authentication types?

I can't check this while I am at work, but your hypothisys sounds correct.

It could very well be something like this, however as for your Earthlink problem (even though this is slightly off topic - although AOL might have a similar setup) use smtpauth.earthlink.net instead of smtp.earthlink.net when you are accessing Earthlink email while not connected to Earthlink via dial-up or Earthlink highspeed.

I'm getting the same message.

As a short term solution, if you have another SMTP server that does not require authentication, you can have mail.app use that server as the default for sending mail and still use the imap to recieve.

Can anyone translate this to Mail.app speak for me? I thought I was pretty sharp, but I couldn't get it to send through AOLs servers. I can receive.

I found the following link that describes the setup.
http://help.channels.aol.com/article.adp?catId=1&sCId=416&sSCId=4093&articleId=217449
It mentions that the port that needs to be used for the smtp server (smtp.aol.com) is 587 and not the usual port of 25. I've made this change but still cannot send via the smtp server - but perhaps this will fix the problem for someone else.

Regarding the send problem some have experienced. I tested 3 imap clients on my system.
Access AOL email via IMAP in mail clients
Currently, AOL's SMTP server doesn't work with Mail.app because AOL's server is not using PLAIN authentication when Mail.app wants to use LOGIN authentication. There's a topic going on this on USENET, see http://tinyurl.com/3hkqf.
