Create a SmartPlaylist that excludes unchecked songs Apps
I have about 1,000 songs in my iTunes library and about 200 of them are unchecked for one reason or another, and I wanted to make a playlist that included my checked songs only. To do this, I simply went to the File menu, and selected New Smart Playlist. In the window that pops up, the first condition I chose was "Date Added / is after / 01/01/95." That condition includes all the songs in my library since they are all added after 1995, and then I simply checked "Match only checked songs." I now have a "Checked Songs" playlist that updates on the fly, depending on if a song is checked or not. Works out nicely.

Create a SmartPlaylist that excludes unchecked songs

Just thinking this through, then, the first requirement doesn't necessarily need to be date-related, but can just be any filter that you know will encompass your entire library.

This is a hint how?

The checkbox to include only checked songs is obvious. I don't understand how this qualifies as a "hint."

I'm with you here, buddy. This is not a hint, it's an obvious direction for how to use iTunes that most people would/should know already. Let's try to keep it hints only here!

Just a warning involving smart playlists using the "match checked" option: One time I created a similar playlist of 30 or so songs and without thinking I did a cmd-uncheck to uncheck all of them. Since I also had live updating on, this removed all of them from the list, replacing them with all new songs, and now I have 30 random unchecked songs floating around my library somewhere. I'm still working on tracking them all down.

Then go back into the smart playlist and remove the only match checked songs, and check the ones that aren't again.

The way I did this...

I had the same problem as G-Mantle above: I used to use the checked songs method of deciding what songs got rotated onto my iPod and which songs didn't. I accidentally cmd-unchecked all 1200 songs one day; very frustrating. Instead of using the incredibly fragile check box system, what I did was give a one-star rating to all the songs I wanted kept out of rotation on the iPod, and leave the ratings blank on all other songs. Then I made a Smart Playlist that ignored songs with one-star ratings. Easy peasy.

The downside of using the "Smart Playlist" to control iPod syncing
Authored by: DanPritchard on Apr 01, '04 05:09:32AM

I use a similar method to restrict my work iPod to 5GB of my best and most relevant music.

The downside is, when you select to "Only sync these playlists," you also don't get any other playlists on your iPod unless you explicitly enable them too.

For a simplistic example, let's say your library consists of ten songs by Weezer that are five-star great, and two songs by the Talentless Hack Band that you keep around because your roommate insists on hearing them every day. You don't want the (one-star) THB songs on your iPod, so you make a S-Playlist that excludes one-star songs and set up iPod to only download those songs.

Let's say later you make a couple of playlists consisting wholly of Weezer Songs, "Weezer's Top 5 Hits" and "Three Sad Songs By Weezer." When you sync your iPod, you won't see either of those playlists on it unless you go back in and manually add them to the "whitelist" in iPod options. And what if you don't necessarily want to add a song to iPod just because you happened to drag it over to a previously-"whitelisted" playlist?

I like to use my one complex S-playlist to do all the controlling of what songs download, so I don't really want to have to go enabling other playlists every time I make them just so I can have playlists to listen to on my iPod. I think there should be an option to send all playlists to iPod, even if the songs aren't there. The iPod would just skip songs that were absent, and those who were bothered by that would just leave the option in its default, off, state.

I don't get it. They don't play if they are in the playlist and unchecked. So does it really matter?

You have an option to have only checked songs load to the iPod anyway, so I don't see the point of this either. And if I'm not mistaken, iTunes skips past unchecked songs if you are playing songs from your library also.

I have more music in iTunes then will fit on my 10 GB iPod, so this is how I have managed my music from the first day I got my iPod.

You are mistaken. It doesn't, at least not that I know of.

Purging Unavailable files?
Authored by: erichsu on Mar 31, '04 02:39:57PM

While we're doing iTunes for Dummies, is there an easy way I can purge all the unavailable files from my library? I suppose 'Consolidate' can do it, but I don't want my music files local on my computer...

I believe you can find a script there that will do what you want. Dave has lots of fun AppleScripts to do all sorts of things.
