Easily add DiskWarrior to TechTool Pro 4.0.2 Apps
At the onset, I should say that Micromat does NOT support adding anything to its TechTool Pro (TTP) eDrive. But some of us did add DiskWarrior (DW) to TTP 4.0.1's eDrive, and now that I'm freed of the beta tester's secrecy agreement by the March 23 public release of 4.0.2, I can report that 4.0.2 and DiskWarrior 3.0.1 continue to co-exist in harmony on the new version's eDrive.

One creates the eDrive and has TTP launch it on re-start. Then you drag DW from its applications folder into the eDrive's applications folder. That's it! Just drag the icon down from the eDrive's apps folder to the Dock and click on it. Although that's hardly what Micromat intended, it gives one a great combination of the best strengths of both great Mac utilities in a fast-operating equivalent of adding a second drive to a laptop or single-drive computer. Goodbye, CDs. For the record, I'm a volunteer beta tester and retired communications professor.

Using the same approach, you can add any programs you want to the eDrive. I've added Virex (no viruses for OS X yet, but heck, it's nice to be sure), Data Rescue X, and Cocktail.

Once you boot into the eDrive you can install pretty much anything you can install on your other partition. For example, Norton Utilities, anti-virus software, Disk Utility, web browsers, etc. I just tried it and it worked. Didn't realize it was a big deal.

How did you add Norton Utilities to eDrive?
Authored by: Norm Nager on Mar 29, '04 06:20:57PM

Congratulations! Adding Norton Utilities is a breakthrough. I've seen other reports in the forums re: NU, but only of failures to install. How did you add Norton Utilities, please? Did you install from the CD or drag over all the files? If installing from the CD, were you able to use NUM's LiveUpdate? If dragging, do you have a list of files? Which version of NUM? Thanks. Norm.

Don't

install

Norton.

Have you not seen, heard, and/or read enough about this? They were useful in 9 and below, but not at all *safe* to be used with any Mac running Mac OS X.

Stick to Techtool/Diskwarrior/Data Rescue X, the new 'holy trilogy' of Mac troubleshooting and recovery.

Heck, I haven't trusted it since the pre-HFS+ days. I think Norton 3.5.2 was the last version I would entrust my data to.

I must have missed that day -- what is an 'eDrive'?

Thanks

Any luck with the Terminal? TTP installs the Terminal in the Utilities folder but every time I try to open the Terminal, I get a mini window that I cannot resize no matter what I try. Can anyone help with getting Terminal to work with eDrive? Thanks.

The mini-Terminal window is typically due to font incompatibility or corruption. Open up Font Book, which should also be installed on the eDrive in the Applications folder, and be sure that the "Monaco" font is not disabled. Terminal needs it in order to display a full window correctly.

I've been doing a manual version of TechTool's eDisk for years:

When you get a new machine or hard drive, repartition it to have a second partition called "Maintanence" or similar. Do a scratch install of the OS on BOTH partitions or install on the main one and clone it to the second. Then install anything you might need to repair/optimize the main disk. You'll need copies of the repair utilities on the main drive in case the maintanence drive gets damaged.
