Network an HP DeskJet in a mixed Mac/PC environment Network
Problem:
Need to share a USB-only HP DeskJet 990c in a mixed Mac/PC wireless network.

Network Environment:
Cable modem plugged into Linksys 11b wireless router. Mac plugged directly into router. Toshiba laptop has built-in 11b wireless.

Solution:
Buffalo Technologies USB Print Server (model #LPV2-USB-TX1).

Notes:
I couldn't get the iMac to work with the standard HP drivers, but the Gimp drivers did the trick. The initial set up of the Buffalo USB print server must be done from Windows, but once that is accomplished it can be administered via web pages. For some reason I couldn't get IP Printing to work on the Mac but was successful using Rendezvous.

I'll be glad to post the steps I took, or to email them to anyone. Bottom line, this was an inexpensive ($59) solution that seems to work pretty well.

A Windows machine is no longer needed to set up the Buffalo USB Print server. Also, the module is set by default to use DHCP. So, if you are plugging it into a router running a DHCP server, IGNORE the directions in the manual - simply point your browser to the IP address that is assigned to the print server module, and the setup menu will load.

This advice is working for me, with one serious problem: graphics print extremely poorly (very pixelated and dim, way off color).

Any advice on getting graphics to print close to what they print when the HP printer is hooked up via USB?

I have a OfficeJet D145, if it matters. FWIW; the default HP print drivers really suck, I could only print the last page of any multi-page print job :(

Don't even bother with DHCP or Windows! Assign your Mac 169.254.41.178/255.255.255.0. Plug into a hub with no uplink or DHCP. Then point your browser to 169.254.41.179. Tech support told me that the product assigns itself this IP when DHCP isn't present.
