A simple tip. In the FileMaker 7 Pro and Developer Application Folder, navigate to the Extensions folder. Create a new folder called "Dictionary (Inactive)." Move all of the Dictionary language plug-ins you do not plan on using into this folder. Note: Leave usengmed.mpr and User.upr in the Dictionary folder.

Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
I noticed no performance increase at all on my dual 1.42GHz. G4. So if you have a newer machine this is probably not worth it.
Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
You might try it again. Apps tend to launch more quickly after the first time after a reboot, so you may have been getting speed increases due to two factors instead of one. Try relogging in, and launching FileMaker once to get the first launch out of the way. Then launch it again and time the launch time. Then do the hint and try it again.
Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
Following the advice of this hint reduced the startup time on my mac from 8 Dock bounces to 3 (I've repeated the process to confirm it).
Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
Does anyone know what usengmed is for? I assumed it was a medical dictionary and removed it.
Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
It did not make any differece for me on my 1Ghz G4 powerbook.
Reduce FileMaker Pro 7 launch times
On my 'fast' G3 4OO iMac this did not appear to make any difference. 34 seconds to Open File dialogue regardless of the number of dictionaries loading. Oh well, it was worth the try. |
