In the past, I have had the mixed blessing of using SPSS v11.0.2 for performing statistical analyses on large chunks of Psychological data. Well, now I've upgraded to Panther, and was more than a little alarmed to find that this rather pricey bit of software could no longer generate most types of charts and tables without a large string of perplexing errors from something amusingly entitled 'HOOPS.' Almost every request would result in a stream of errors, usually along the lines of:

Warning (51/2) from HOOPS routine 'Compute_Text_Extent'. If a font is scaleable, 'vspace' should be the vspace-to-Aheight ratio.
A little searching revealed that HOOPS is a set of graphics subroutines, and that these are built into SPSS rather than being OS related. Luckily, the cure is a simple one.

The problem seems to stem from a font which is installed with Mac OS X 10.3 when you opt to include fonts for additional languages (which is not enabled by default). Using the Font Book, simply disable or remove 'Euphemia UCAS' and restart SPSS. After that, all your problems will be behind you. Apart from your stats, but I can't help you there!
