Mute startup sound via Universal Access settings System
I discovered that if you checked the "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs" under the Hearing tab of the Univeral Access panel in System Preferences, the startup sound is muted.

The rest of my sound still countinues to work, though you will get a flash each time your system has an event sound. But I rather like it this way. Good for when I am in class and I need to mute my sound and yet still be aware something needs my attention.

This is not the case for me. I've had "Flash the Screen..." checked ever since it was available and still have a startup chime.

Same over here. No effect. And I think is pretty normal since visualisation not really has anything to do with sound, I guess.

Definitely not working on my 10.3.2 G5 dual 2Ghz. I doubt it works for many and wonder why it's working for the original poster -- i.e., what's really preventing that startup sound.

Not working for me...

This hint has almost certainly another twist to it. I have been using the flash together with alert sound setting since day one - I like it better that way and I think it's cool.

Still, the startup sound is all but gone. Just a few hours ago, I was restarting once again (after the 10.3.3 update) and the startup sound almost woke up my roommate (it was 4AM). So it's definitely not working for me.

There is a fantastic and freely available preference pane that you can download from here called StartupSound.prefPane. With this program, you can not only mute the startup sound via System Preferences but you can change its volume. All of this is independent of the system sound.

For me, this has been a lifesaver with my wife's iMac DV, Dual G5, and original iBook and my G4 Aluminum PowerBook. On the desktop machines, you can now turn them on or reboot them at night without raising the dead. With the portables, we can bring them to the library or other quiet places and turn them on or reboot with a quieter startup chime but still have some indication that the laptop has actually turned on.

I have successfully used this application from OS X 10.2.8 through the recently released 10.3.3 on all of these devices with no problems whatsoever, despite the fact that the author has not yet updated his web page to include the latest OS X revision.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the program or its authors, I am just a very grateful user.

I tried this and it works great and is nice to have in your back pocket but I'm not sure I'll use it all the time - there are times when I want the world to know who is starting to conduct business.
