A fix for not receiving an IP address using DHCP Network
After having updated from MacOS X 10.1 to 10.2, my G3 was "almost" unable to receive an IP address using DHCP (almost because it took sometimes several hours to get one). My ISP is comhem.se in Sweden, and they where unable to help me. But looking around on the net, I found that some other problems concerning DHCP were solved setting the "DHCP Client ID."

So the solution is: Enter a DHCP Client ID even if the ISP says they don't require one! I experienced the same problem when using 10.3...

Or e-mail the host and ask them to turn off 'spanning tree'. We have the same problem here on campus all the time. You could also by a cheap router and put it between the Mac and the Outside.

I don't think the ISP is going to turn off Spanning Tree just for a few users.....

You could also try disabling IPv6 in the Network settings. I have had success with that as well.

I wish I knew about the IPv6 suggestion two days ago when I was in Oklahoma City in a hotel with free broadband internet from an ethernet socket in the wall.

Now that I've read it in various places, I'll remember it for next time. Oh well.

How do you give it a DHCP client address. That is, I assume you can't just put anything in arbitrarilly. So what kind of a number/letter sequence do you need to put in? And does it matter or have any other advers effects?

Thanks,

Greg

I don't think you have to put something specific in, as the DHCP server doesn't even care. It's just populating the field that sometimes will help with this "bug".
