The Thunderbird email client features the ability to use multiple profiles on a single machine, much like its browser counterpart. However, there is no obvious way of accessing the Profile Manager with the Mac OS X version of the client. This FAQ entry shows how to launch the Profile Manager under Windows, but there's no equivalent on the Mac side... is there?

Well, actually, it turns out there is. By launching the Thunderbird binary from the Terminal, you can add the necessary -p switch specified in the FAQ entry. Assuming Thunderbird is located in your /Applications directory, the following command will launch the Profile Manager:

/Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin -p &

The & at the end allows you to quit the Terminal after launching the Profile Manager. Once you set up multiple profiles, the Profile Manager will always launch (unless you tell it not to.)
