Safari cookies may fail with future dates

This is more of a solution, than a hint. A few days ago I encountered a problem with Safari, specifically, many sites that requires stored cookie to log in refuses to log in. I tried to reset Safari's settings. No effect. None for cleaning the cache, reinstalling Safari, removing all Safari components manually, using shareware to snoop for hidden cache or spyware. All had no effect.

Finally, I noticed that any new files and folders I was creating had creation dates way into the future (year 2020). I changed the date & time in the System Preferences, and walla! Everything's running fine again.

[robg adds: The system clock affects a number of things; if possible, use the Network Time option to keep the clock synched to a master server -- this will insure that your clock is hopefully always correct, assuming you have a network connection.]
