Bypass artist info autofill in iTunes Apps
If you ever want to enter "REM" for the Artist info field, but iTunes keeps auto-correcting it to "ReM" because you have "Red Hot Chili Peppers" in your library, you can enter " REM" and delete the space character.

Note: If the beginning space does not work, try a character that does not exist as an artist's first character in your library.

[robg adds: Since I happened to have both REM and Red Hot Chili Peppers in my library, I tried this, and indeed, iTunes tries to outsmart you. You can see it for yourself by trying to set the artist on any random album to the first two letters (capitalized) of any other artist's name. Another way to fix the problem is to use the back arrow to go back and manually replace the 'e' with 'E'.]

Or enter it as "R.E.M."! ;-)

Good idea, being that's their actual name. :)

Isn't that the correct way, R.E.M.?

You know, the CDDB that iTunes polls will do all the naming you ever need.
'Course, that won't work for mix CDs your friends make you, but still.

also, cutting and pasting in the correct artist name bypasses the auto-formatting... (i.e. copy the correct artist listing from one track, and paste it into a new track.)

Yeah, I filed this as a bug report last summer. Fixing it with a leading space is not fixing it.

Does anyone know how to disable autofill system-wide? Safari constantly messes up the urls i'm typing, and Address Book changes capitalization & even sometimes "helpfully" completes names, such as turning "Paul" into "Paula" if I'm not quick enough with the tab key... It's absolutely infuriating.

It is annoying, but it can be also very helpful. So how do you define a common ground?

What is infuriating is when an artist had been mis-typed at some time in the past (Tom waits) and iTunes decides that's the way the name should be, no matter how many times you enter it correctly (Tom Waits, then going back and removing the extra space each time gets pretty old pretty fast.)

These must be in a cache or file somewhere that we can toss without deleting all our iTunes prefs...
