Prevent Mail.app error messages with dummy accounts Apps
Many people are aware that in order to get sub-boxes to appear in IMAP accounts, you must have more than one account. If you only have one real email account, you must create a dummy account. In certain versions of Mail, when you manually click the Get mail button, the dummy acount will be checked. This means mail tries to connect to dummy.com (or whatever you put as the mail server), and results in an annoying and useless error message taking the dummy account offline.

Unfortunately, when creating the dummy account, Mail forces you to enter a server name. You can get around this by entering a name, quitting, and manually editing ~/Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.Mail.plist. Search for the tag under the dummy account, and in the field that follows, remove the dummy hostname so you have:
<key>Hostname</key>
<string></string>
with no characters between the tags. Relaunch Mail, and enjoy your error-free existence.

Mail.app works fine here with one accounts and many mailboxes. I'm running the Courier suite on the server side.

I am not sure why you need a dummy account at all (there are some reasons though).

But usually if you want to use different sender email addressed it is enough to just add a comma separated list of email addresses in the account's email address field (in the accounts preferences pane).

The point is to have different full names for the different accounts, the comma separated values will all share the same name...

thanx for the tip!

i use multiple "Full Names" depending on who i am sending to

unfortunately you can't use commas to separated multiple full names like you can for multiple email addys - i also tried using the same array of strings format in com.apple.mail.plist for "FullUserName" as for "EmailAddresses" but it just broke my accounts :((

oh well at least now i dont have that annoying exclamation mark :)

Well - that's news to me! I have a catch-all incoming address free with my domain registration which gets mail to the 4 addresses I use. I had several accounts in Mail.app set up as this hint describes: Not any more.

Andy.

I have a POP account with an alias and I'd like to keep the 2 identities apart one from the other. Disabling the "Include when autamatically checking for new mail" checkbox hasn't worked since Panther upgrade. Your hint is exactly what I've been looking for.

Thanks a lot!

I have the same situation with having multiple e-mail addresses aliased to a single POP account for anti-spam purposes. I haven't had any problem with disabling retreiving message for the alias accounts. However I have added my aliases after switching to Panther, so perhaps something in upgrading the mail config is the problem you are seeing?

The inability to see server side IMAP subfolders was a pre 10.3 issue. This has been fixed in Panther.

Really happy with this tip, sometimes I would even quit Mail and restart just to have it check for my mail without bugging me...
By the way, this is on a POP account, same problem and solution works just as good.

To be clear, my problem was that I want to send from an account that forwards to another. So I want to have it as a sending option but don't want Mail to check it because there's nothing to check.
And until this solution I didn't see any way of stopping it.
