10.3: Set a print preset as the default System
This is actually a re-hash of a hint first published almost 20 years ago ... on paper ... because there was no MacOSXHints!

Once you've created a Print Preset that suits your needs, save it with a unique name. You'll be able to select it from the Presets popup menu in the Print dialog. But what if you want that to be the default setting? Reaching back into our collective Macintosh memory, hold down the Option key when selecting the Print button and the current Preset will become the default for all apps.

Finally! I was able to get rid of that "reverse order" nonsense! Did you know that, when "reverse order" is checked, printing pages 1 to 2 of a four page document prints pages 3 to 4? Can you say "Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing?" How about "Windoze-like !@%$##%!"? I know you can!

But there really should be a more intuitive GUI option for setting default printer settings. In fact, if you have multiple printers, you should be able to designate individual default settings for each printer.

I don't think so.

The last used prest sticks the next time you print. I think that is about as intuitive as it gets. In fact, I do not think holding down the option key does anything.

Also, reverse order 1, 2 prints 2, 1 for me. (Word on an HP 2510)

This Hint doesn not work for me on 10.3.3 it just goes back to what I ever I last selected. Is it supposed to come up with a dialog BOX like OS 9 did??

Cheers Matt

I don't have any of the problems reported in this hint with the "reverse order" print option. I tested it with Word and documents over ten pages in length.

10.3: Set a print preset as the default

Something I discovered soon after installing Panther is that having Word's reverse print order feature enabled, as well as in the new printing options in OS X, reverses the reversal! Bringing it out in the right order. I was thinking somehow this could account for the odd behaviour described. So now I've switched off reverse print order in Word and let the OS handle it. Normality restored!

Rob.

I don't know what you're doing but when I choose a particular print setting, it remembers for the next time. I don't have to press option. It just always presents me with the last one I used.

I had to press the Option key in order to make the print dialog use my
new settings as the default one.
Have you guys tried it anyway? do you have multiple settings? does it shows you always the last settings you've used, or does it show you (after using the option key as in the hint) the new "default" one?

How do you fix bad presets

OT but I'm desperate 8-) Somehow during the many upgrades of OS X to my current 10.3.2, I seem to have corrupted some presets I have. Just selecting them from any application bombs the app every time. Does anyone know where presets live and how to kill them?

It seems that they are stored in:

com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
