Play iTunes music during import without performance hit Apps
Following the Rip Multiple CDs hint, I found a loss in performance when iTunes tries to import the cd and play it at the same time. The solution is to let iTunes import the first track, and then start the playing from the newly imported track in the library and not from the cd. Since importing is always faster than actually running the CD, your listening will always be behind the actual import process.

Of course, this works smoothly with "normal" CD. If you try this with Keith Jarrett's La Scala, you'll have to wait about 15 minutes before the first 44.52 minute track is imported to be able to play it!

Play iTunes music during import without performance hit

This is what the "Play songs while importing" preference does; it automatically starts playing from the library as soon as the first track is done.

No need to wait for first track to finish importing.

Actually, there is no need to wait for the first track to finish importing. At least, the following worked up until at least iTunes 2.0 -- I don't have a CD on me right now to test it in the current version of iTunes.

1. As soon as you've started importing the songs from CD, go to your library. You should be able to find the song being imported (i.e. the first track on the CD) but its name will be greyed out.

2. However, that doesn't matter. You can still click on the name and hit play.

3. By the time iTunes finishes playing this first song, the second song will be available and it will just start playing that.

As noted in another comment, this is how the "Play while importing" feature works (it doesn't wait for the whole first track to finish importing before starting to play).

This is still true for MP3 files, however AAC files have to be imported completely before they will play.
