Display download speed in Safari 1.2 Web Browsers
Reader Ollie H. emailed this one in ... Safari 1.2 has a new feature that will show you the speed of your downloads. Start a lengthy download, open the Downloads window, and then Option-click on the line below the file name -- instead of the time remaining, you'll now see your download speed in KB per second. Option-click again to switch back to time remaining.

The way this hint is written leads one to think that this behavior (displaying the current speed) is new in Safari 1.2. However, this was already available in every Safari version I can remember. The new feature in 1.2 is the display of time remaining, and the necessary option-click to alternate between the two types of info now available.

If you read the hint again you must option click on the line below the download name. The place where it is displaying the seconds remaining.

I just tried it in 10.3.3 running Safari 1.2.1 and it works perfectly.

Great hint!

I also liked the softwareupdate running from the CL to speedup the updates.
Keep it up Mac OS X Hints!!!!

Does anyone know if there's a way to have the downloads window default to displaying the download speed instead of the time remaining? I find it's a handy way to keep an eye on the quality of my connection.
