Doesn't work if there are QuickTime movies on the page, though.

I use this one a lot, but haven't seen it mentioned anywhere: Command-Left Arrow doubles as a Back button in Safari, and Command-Right Arrow is its Forward buttoon counterpart. It's not in Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts in Debug menu, but it's perhaps common knowledge.

Another shortcut for forward and back in Safari
It will work with a QT movie on the page, so long as focus is not on the movie. Click outside the movie and the keyboard shortcut will work. Granted, if you have to click outside the QT movie you might as well click the back button in Safari.

It also won't work, obviously, if you're typing in a text box, because then it jumps the cursor to the start or end of a line.
Arrow Keys are focus-limited in Safari
The main problem (as alluded to in the above post), is that the [CMD]-[Arrow] combination is focus-limited in Safari. In pages that (unfortunately) use frames or where the mouse focus is on an embedded object, rather than the page containing it, [CMD]-[Arrow] tries to affect the object, not the page being viewed.
Personally, I don't understand the logic here, but it has made me change my habits to [CMD]-[Bracket], (which really only meant that I had to change a mouse button assignment, and little else.)
Arrow Keys are focus-limited in Safari
Actually, the use is Cmd-left bracket to go back and Cmd-right bracket to go forward. The Cmd left & right arrow keys only work in some instances.
Arrow Keys are focus-limited in Safari
Yeah, I realize that each bracket and arrow direction sends the browser location in that direction (when that direction is available within the window's history). I just didn't feel like writing out each instance twice, when I was using the general case to explain the limitation of using the arrow keys, in regards to their mouse-focus limitations, whereas the bracket-based navigation is globally window-focus-based.
(Did that make any sense?)
Most Browsers?
Just about every browser that I've used since OS9 (maybe 8?) has supported this functionality..
Most Browsers?
Well I just ran Netscape 1.1N (so much better than 1.0!!!! hehehe) and it supports Command-L/R Arrows. It's from Spring 1995....
Another shortcut for forward and back in Safari
Amazing. I've been using this with Camino, and now Safari and I never thought that it was undocumented. Very useful though.

It should be noted that not only does Safari use the square brackets, the Finder does too. I've mapped by Logitech mouse to use command-bracket(s) for Forward and Back for all apps and it works in a few.
Another shortcut for forward and back in Safari
I've been using that shortcut since I first switched to mac.
There's another way to do this?
I thought Cmd-left/right arrow keys was the standard...
Another shortcut for forward and back in Safari
Command is the modifier for Macs but Alt is the modifier for PCs. Alt is located on a PC keyboard exactly where the command key is located on an Apple keyboard so the new keyboard shortcut was a natural transition. It was the same shortcut to my fingers. |
