Create new folders from save dialogs via the keyboard System
As I was saving a file in TextEdit today, I needed to create a new folder. Since Cocoa applications use sheets for the Save dialog, I can create a new document with Command-N, just the same as when the Save dialog is not visible.

Consequently, I discovered that I can press Shift-Command-N to activate the New Folder button, just as I would when using the shortcut in the Finder. This saves a mouse movement to the New Folder button...

Personally, I wish I could do a lot more in the open/save windows such as rename a file, delete or move a set of files to a new folder, rather than having to save the file and then having to open a new window just to accomplish these simple tasks.

i can barely function any more in X without default folder (http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/index.html): create new folders, delete files/folders, rename files/folders, not to mention favorites, jump to last folder/file used--all within save sheets.

worth the shareware $.

Ugh... one more additional payment on top of my $130 upgrade to make it do what it is suppose to do in the first place. Dog gone it, Apple, get with the program!

But thanks for the download advice.

Oh but this little piece of shareware is like nothing else. Nothing on windows can touch it (and I used Windows much more than I get to use my Mac). Things like open windows in the finder showing up through the save dialog sheet to determine where you want to save things.

MS Windows users have been able to do this for years. It's one of the very few things I like about Windows. I certainly hope that Apple will integrate these features into the OS soon...but I've been hoping for a loooong time now.

Make sure to tell Apple you want this in Mac OS X by using their feedback page (http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/).

Please note, you must have the disclosure triangle (under the filename) down for this hint to work in some (all) applications. For example, if you don't have it down in Safari, it will either open a new window or your bookmarks.

Another tip: In all save dialog boxes hit Command-D to go to the desktop. Wish I could remap the finder to do the same...

Unfortunately in Jaguar, pressing return will not create the folder after typing in the name. You actually need to click on the button. They finally fixed it in Panther, which sad to say, is one of the reasons I upgraded to it.
