Enable both GPRS and Address Book over Bluetooth Network

I connect to the internet through Bluetooth and my t68i. But although I can receive calls and text messages during the GPRS connection, it was a pity that I couldn't turn on Address Book functionality. A quick look into BluetoothMonitor from the Developer Tools package (in Applications -> Utilities -> Bluetooth) gave the answer: both default modem and Address Book uses the same channel ID (1), which results in conflict. So, I opened Bluetooth Serial Utility in /Applications -> Utilities, and added a new port. I called it "Bluetooth-Serial-2" or whatever:

  • Port Direction: Outgoing
  • Select Device... (your phone name) > Serial Port 2
  • [yes] Show in Network Preferences
  • Port Type: Modem

Then I opened Network Preferences and it asked me to add the new port. I made some cosmetic changes -- renamed it to "Bluetooth modem" and disabled the original "USB Bluetooth Modem Adaptor" in "Network Port Configuration." Then I set up the PPP section (remembering to uncheck "Send PPP echo packets" in PPP Options...) to my former values, as well as Bluetooth modem (thanks to these GPRS scripts which works great!)

And now it works, because it uses RFCOMM Channel ID: 5 now. When typing this, I received some SMSes and a phone call and they popped up! I also tried iSync (which uses channel 11) and first I got some error messages. However, I believe it was because I was downloading a large file at the same time as for the second and third tries, everything was okay.

I hope that this helps somebody too. I haven't found any other resources with this problem. I also don't know what are those security (authentication and encryption) options in adding the serial port?

Enable both GPRS and Address Book over Bluetooth

Wow thanks, this is a very cool hint.
I'll go and check if I can do the same (iSynching my BT cell) while using a BT headset.

Thanks!

Enable both GPRS and Address Book over Bluetooth and BT Headset?
Authored by: arkitetto on Feb 04, '04 03:22:43PM

Yep, really a cool hint!

I'm trying to make my BT headset work too, but it seems that is not possible to use Address Book+phone w/headset (call & reiceve) at the same time.

I'm using a Motorola BT headset and a t68i: they work fine until you dont' open address book, but then the headset stop working and you can only answer the phone 'by hand'.

Has anyone some suggestions for me?

Thanks

Is anyone on T-mobile using GPRS?
Authored by: penum6ra on Feb 04, '04 11:47:20AM

I have found tons of links to people referring to a tutorial on how to get T-mobile's new free GPRS to work, but I have yet to be able to find that tutorial. Can someone post a link (so I can try this hint out)? thx

Worked for me, for the most part.

There is a thread over at Apple Discussions about how to configure a BT phone as a modem that I found helpful. It refers to a site that has lots of Apple modem scripts for mobile phones, which have worked great for me.

Can't seem to get it to work with a 3650
Authored by: alynch on Feb 04, '04 10:53:34PM

Doesn't seem to work. The new serial ports that get added in the Bluetooth Serial Utility aren't listed as "Bluetooth Modem" in the Network control panel. The only device that gets listed is the Bluetooth device.

I'm able to use GPRS, and CSD over GSM from my 10.3. All Bluetooth functions seem to work.

However, I don't have any existing entries in the Bluetooth Serial Utility, anyways. Well, except for mRouter popping in there as an "Inbound" device.

Ideas? I'm running 10.3.2, and I've got a Nokia 3650 with T-Mobile service.

When I add a new port in Bluetooth Serial Utility (Outgoing, Device... Serial Port 2, Show in Network Preferences, Port Type: Modem) and name it e.g. MyBluetoothModem (can't use spaces here), then when opening System Preferences > Network I get this dialog:

New Port Detected

A new network port has been detected:

MyBluetoothModem
Please verify that it is configured correctly, then press Apply Now to activate it.

I can see it then in Network Port Configuration and change its name to something more fancy (My Bluetooth Modem). Doesn't your computer behave like this?
