Quickly rip multiple CDs with iTunes Apps
I remember seeing a request either here or on slashdot.org about a quick way to rip a lot of CDs without user interaction. It turns out Apple was one step ahead of us. I guess they figured people are going to have a lot of cds they want to import and want a quick way to do it.

First go to the preferences for iTunes and look on the General section. There is a drop down for an item called "On CD Insert". Select the option "Import Songs and Eject". This will make iTunes grab the track names for the CD, import all the tracks and eject the CD when it's done without you touching a button. Don't forget to set it back to whatever you had before or CDs won't play.

Hope this helps those looking to import their library without to much hassle.

[robg adds: Typically, I don't run hints on application's preferences settings, but this one is a favored email help request, so I figured it's worth the space....]

Works well as described, but a few minutes after eject, my computer will close the cd tray causing iTunes to try to re-import the same CD unless it has been removed.

Luckily that won't happen to those of us with slot-loading drives ;)

I'm pretty sure that was slashdot, and that the person was looking for a way to rip more than one CD at a time (using multiple optical drives), I wonder if this feature can be used that way.

I was offered a penny for my thoughts, so I gave my two cents... I got ripped off.

It's too bad that the CDDB database of track names is so full of mistakes. It seems people can't be bothered to spell check or even type correctly.

This means that, if you use this speedy rip-n-eject method, and if you are anal about your files having the right track info, you will have to go over all the CDs you imported later and check them for correctness.

I've run into the CDDB bad-tag issue before, but you can get the best of both worlds by using a Smart Playlist to build a list of songs added on a certain date - then just go in and edit the tags to your heart's content.

You can also enable the Date Added column in list view and sort on that.

Or, I you insert a CD that is not in the CDDB, you will import track1, track2, track3....etc. which you will have to go back and fix later if you want to have actual song titles in iTunes for this CD.

Try the AppleScript Rip CDs In A Row. This applet imports the enabled tracks of each mounted audio CD in a multi-CD set-up without interuption—rip 2, 3, more CDs in succession and unattended. Uses your Preferences-set encoder to import all tracks. Tested successfully on systems with up to ten CD drives. It also works with disk images created and mounted with Toast (Disk Copy/Disk Utility not tested).

remember to check the option: "connect to Internet when needed". If you do not do that, itunes will rip the CD without going to CDDB to grab the track names.
