Paste files inline in Mail messages

Just now when I was attempting to copy a file name and paste it into a Mail message it added the file as an inline attachment instead. I tried pasting again into the subject line and it just puts the file name, like I was going for originally. I guess this could be useful as a way to attach files without dragging, I've never been a fan of copying and pasting files though, just seems somehow wrong.

[robg adds: If you want the filename only pasted in the body of the message, you'll need to click on the filename itself in the Finder, then hit copy when the name highlights for editing. Pasting this copy in the body will get you text-only, instead of attaching the file.]
