I am sure other people have probably stumbled across this one, but if your Safari Bookmarks menu takes a while to pop up (like mine did -- very frustrating), just make sure that the bookmark names are short, as long ones slow it up considerably.

Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I have encountered this problem as well. I have many bookmarks and quite a few have long names. Finally, I just started using LaunchBar to get to all of my bookmarks, and in Safari, I only store them in the bookmarks sidebar--not in the bookmarks menu. Then if I accidentally go over the Bookmarks menu in the menu bar I don't have to watch the spinning ball for 10 seconds.

That is EXACTLY what I do as well. I am wondering, do we need to shorten the names of ALL the links in their various folders, or just the top-level folders to gain the speed increase?
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I completely agree with the fact that my Bookmarks (imported from Netscape and IE) take at least 10 to 15 seconds to load. For me to go through them all and shorten the titles would take forever. But hey, it might just be worth it. I also noted the same thing when putting a folder in the Bookmark bar. Yet when I tried it at work, the slowdown did not seem to occur. Hmmm. Need to do more testing at home.
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I only keep a few bookmarks in the bookmarks menu, but even so, I noticed an dramatic improvement when I shorted a few names.
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I don't really keep any bookmarks in the bookmarks menu. I have my bar broken into groups (Dev, Personal, Work, etc) and then put new bookmarks in there. No speed issues, really, because it's all broken down, but I've noticed that it does load faster if I keep the names short and sweet. Then if I hit the Bookmarks menu by mistake, I don't get a beachball at all. :)
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I get a slowdown the first time I pull down my bookmark bar menus. I put it down to using some obscure Unicode characters for which the OS presumably has to hunt for a suitable font before displaying them.
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
No, I keep all my bookmark names short - 2 or 3 words only. It makes for neater menus. But, I still see the slowdown.

It's true, I just tried it as well, just shortened a few, went amazingly faster, For sites having to do with Apple I always use: "?" and then something to tell me which site it is by either 1 letter or a symbol, very easy, and very short.... I can see ±15 bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar with a normal window size

By "?" I meant an Apple symbol: Shift+Alt(Option)+'k'
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
That is the neatest hint I have heard. I just tried it and love it!
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
yeah, I try to always use characters to represent folders of bookmarks on the bar- you'd be surprised how many can fit up there. Edit>Special Characters or (if installed via International preferences) hit the flag in the menu bar and call up the Character Palette.
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
I have over 20 sub-folders in my Bookmarks menu. Some names are a bit long, but not many. I find it takes a long time (and a lot of disk reading) to draw the menu the first time after launching Safari, but after that it's not bad.
Speed up Safari's Bookmarks menu
Yeah, I discovered this long before Safari. I first encountered the trick with OmniWeb in MacOS X 10.0

I had the pizza as well. What helped: To put the bookmarks into the bookmarks menu. (Before that I kept them in the left column under the bookmarks menu folder.) |
