Since Panther's introduction, there are package installers that won't run from network volumes anymore, such as OS updates, QuickTime, iCal, and pretty much all those you find from Software Update. Do the following on the package, though, and then they will run from network volume:

Open contents on the package (via control-click and Show Package Contents), then open the info.plist file with any editor. Under IFPkgFlagAuthorizationAction, change the entry from RootAuthorization to No Authorization.

[robg adds: Potentially, this could be a Bad Thing To Do (I'm thinking Apple made this change for a valid reason?). I won't pretend to know what, if any, the consequences may be, so I'll just finish with "Have you made a backup recently?]
