10.3: Use XPostFacto alpha to install 10.3 on a Beige G3 System
I read of the difficulties some people had had with earlier versions of XPostFacto in attempting to do what Apple said was impossible: installing Panther on a Mac without factory-installed USB. When XPostFacto 3.0a11 came out within the past couple weeks, I bought a Radeon 7000 Mac Edition card for my pretty-much stock 266-mhz G3 Beige desktop, installed XPF, inserted the first of three Apple Panther Installer CDs and upgraded my 10.2.8 OS to 10.3. And then I ran Software Update to bring it up to 10.3.2.

The upgrade went flawlessly and the Beige operates like a 21st century version of the proverbial Swiss clock with OS 10.3.2 and the same software I run with Panther on my G4.

For details on what was done to prepare for the upgrade, please see my Jan. 21 posting in the MacOSXHints systems forum, where I had earlier posted questions about daring to do the no-longer impossible.

I also succeeded in installing 10.3.3 on a beige G3. Except for one slight hitch, I encoutered no problems. The hitch I bumped in to, was getting a "No disk" icon when rebooting with XPostFacto's drivers in place. The sollution was to put my cdrom on the primary IDE cable, and put my HD on the secondary one.
