Manage and use photos with iPhoto4 and iView Media Pro Apps
At first I was very disappointed that the new version of iPhoto still imports all the photos it is to manage. To iPhoto, import means copy all the images to be managed to a folder you cannot specify. At first I thought "that's completely unacceptable." Like iTunes, I thought iPhoto should have an option that allows the use of a pre-existing folder, one that already has images, and simply reference the images, not copy them.

So, back to the previously mentioned iView Media Pro for general image management. And to think I had such high hopes for the new iPhoto. Then I got to thinking ... what did I want from iPhoto? The ability to manage photos and also the ability to create slideshows, etc. Since Media Pro isn't nearly as good at creating slideshows as iPhoto (it's as bad at slideshows as iPhoto is at general image management), the answer soon became clear.

Photos will be managed using Media Pro, thus gaining access to both the ICPT and EXIF info, plus many more management related features. iPhoto will import select photos that are to be shared via slideshows, etc. Not as good as having one tool for dealing with images, but, upon reflection I don't have that today. I use Photoshop to edit, iView to manage, and iPhoto to share: using the best tool for each task.

I also use iView MediaPro and iPhoto (still the old version, since I have not received my back-ordered iLife 04 in Germany yet). My solution is also easy and as follows: I import all photos into iPhoto (which copies them to the iphoto library in the home directory, which btw is an alias to a different folder somewhere else on my hard drive). I then drag them from iPhoto to iViews dock icon - and presto they are cataloged with iView as well. This way you can use the pics in all apps!

Greetings, Klaus

Thanks! That's a great suggestion that allows both iPhoto and iView to work w/one set of files. iTunes should give more options, but I think this workaround isn't too big a hack, and should solve the problem.

Are you aware of any conflicts or problems caused when iView and iPhoto are both "managing" one set of images? I don't think it would be a problem, but wanted to ask.

I'm glad that someone has this thoughts of the iphoto missing feature of the year; photo thumbnail! I think that Apple do this INTENTIONALLY. Any photo software being commercial, shareware, or even freeware has this feature! In the Mac Expo January 2004, Steve Jobs laughed from Adobe photo album. It's a shame that this software don't belong to Mac platform.
I'm a switcher, I like and love Macs but this i really don't understand: a software that gets higher scores but don't have thumbnail photo browsing. Iphoto in my opinion is the worst piece of Ilife suite, because not having this feature, put the user under the strange and stupid circumstance of running another software to complete the task that iphoto is missing. If this softare doesn't came from Apple, let's be honnest:who would use it?
So, to summarize I use Ulead photoexplorer for browsing photos (much intuitive than Iview). But in the end I'm angry oh yes I'm angry because I know that Apple don't do this in iphoto for obscure reasons.

The fact remains that we should be given the choice of how iPhoto imports media. I too have chosen iView, especially for the fact that I can save a catalog on my various media CDs. Comes in real handy when I archive.

i used to hate that iphoto put files in it's own, mystical, magical way until iphoto 4. the way i sort my entire library is by rolls. i name a roll and date it, and then use the little triangle to hide the rolls i'm not seeing. however, not until iphoto 4 could i move a picture from roll to roll. this is so sweet! who cares now where the files are located? i use the rolls as "virtual" folders. the rolls keep the photos in order.

later,
nick

A hint within a hint! I hadn't realized I could now move pictures between rolls. That was a big nit of mine in previous releases.

I've also noticed that iPhoto4 brings back the rolls of iPhoto CDs created with the old iPhoto.

The biggest drawback of iphoto is that it does not support Raw files from my Canon EosD10 or from any other pro camera which makes it absolutly unusable in a professional workflow. It's sad because the interface is really nicer than Iview's. I don't understand why Iphoto does not use IPTC Tag like itunes uses MP3 tag. It would be so cool.
