10.3: A fix for preference settings that don't seem to stick System
I discovered that certain settings within Bluetooth preferences and iChat preferences, amongst other apps, sometimes weren't sticking past two or three reboots.

After much thinking and playing, I discovered the answer: FileVault. Because FileVault encrypts on the fly, it apparently has a little bit of trouble with the whole preference checkbox thing. So I turned off FileVault, reset the preferences, ran without FileVault for a day, and then turned it on again. Boom, fixed.

[robg adds: I haven't yet (and probably never will!) try FileVault, so I can't confirm either the problem or the fix -- anyone have supporting or non-supporting experiences?]

Sounds good, but unfortunately, I don't use File Vault and yet still have several preferences in iApps that don't stick through reboot (Mail signatures, Finder Applications window settings, among others). Not sure if these are related, but thought it worth mentioning.

I'll place bets now that we have another low disk space problem here...

I have this problem, too, but am confused by something you wrote. If I have low disk space, this can happen? I have a 10gb hard drive in my tibook 400. I have 1.09 GB of space left. Would that be enough to cause the problem?

Basically, the name in iChat revert to other things. Like last names that I take off come back, etc., etc.

This might explain why Flash MX 2004 Pro says there are updated help files every time I launch the app and check for new updates. I can't remember if I've noticed this on my other computer which doesn't have FileVault on.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I've had a problem with my Bluetooth preferences not being saved, particularly the directory where received Bluetooth transfers are saved.

I've had this problem while FileVault is on and after I've turned it off.....it's stopped for a while, I haven't had a problem with it for a bit, but it may reappear

after i turned off my filevault, presto my bluetooth status which kept disappearing from the menubar after a restart/shutdown went back to normal again.

another one, my office v.X also experiencing the same effect from filevault coz it hardly found my equation editor and other objects in the insert menu. i have to delete all files in the preferences/microsoft folder to make sure the objects are detected whenever office starts but it'll disappear after i exit microsoft office. i've installed equation editor a few times, not to mention upgrading to the latest office v.x update. now it's ok after TURNING OFF FILEVAULT.

filevault- sounds cool at first but i now consider it as a buggy option.

I hate file vault and i cant turn it off

I loose prefs on every restart and loose over 2gig of hd space every day! only fix is to restart about 2x a day at least
what is worse is I cant turn it off as you need at least 50% HD space free as it needs to copy all the files again to decrypt them

:-(

I will confirm that the O.P. is correct about FileVault being the culprit for prefs that don't stay set. Everything from Finder prefs like "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before sleep", to Mail forgetting that it's supposed to "Check for new mail every 15 minutes".

This FileVault thing does not seem to affect any third party software, only Apple software. Also, turning Filevault off and then back on WILL correct the problem. I know. I've had to do it to my Powerbook twice. Both times the preferences corruption happened immediately after a kernel panic.

To the poster who can't turn off FileVault because of a lack of disk space:
Go out and buy an external drive, and copy all of your personal files to it. Delete them from your compy's drive, empty the trash, and then turn off FileVault. Restart, and then copy the contents of your home directory back to the compy. You can thank me later!
