I now have a desktop picture for the rest of the day (Jan. 15) of the Orion Nebula. WOW! There's a cool freeware application to check out called APOD Grabber (APOD = Astronomy Picture of the Day). I just downloaded and installed it and put the application in my dock. But I also set the preferences to clear the cache whenever I quit the application, so I don't end up filling my hard drive with the wonders of astronomy.
Another way to get the picture of the day -- but without the automated approach to making it a desktop picture -- is to go to Nasaa's Astronomy Picture of the Day site. Either way, one can get an astronomy lesson that goes with the photo. The information is there when you visist the NASA URL. In APOD, you can get it while you're in the application by doing Command-D (for display) or clicking on Show Display under the APOD Grabber pull-down menu.
