Make audio CDs from MIDI files in iTunes Apps
This may be obvious to many of you, but I have not seen it spelled out, but discovered it when I was experimenting one day. It worked intermittently in Jaguar or it may have just been older versions of iTunes that were the problem, but it seems to work OK in Panther (though it did crash iTunes once).

All you need to do is to drag MIDI files into iTunes and then burn a CD and iTunes does all the work of converting them to a digital recording and burning them onto the disc, which can then be played on any CD player. This is a good way to get free elevator music ;-). It does take quite a bit longer since it needs to convert the MIDI to a recording and then burn. I don't know if it would work with other soundfonts to improve the quality, but can someone out there experiment and submit it here. Putting MIDI files into iTunes is also a quick way to convert them to MP3 (or other formats if you change your import settings in preferences) by using "Convert selection to MP3" under the Advanced menu. This is a necessary step if you want to burn them to an MP3 CD. Apparently iTunes won't automatically convert them to MP3 and burn them onto an MP3 CD in one step, but it will convert them separately so them you can burn an MP3 CD. I hope this is helpful to someone out there.

Add Garageband, orchestrate it, and you have more sophisticated elevator music!

Replacing the default Sounfont with one that demands too many resources might cause MIDI files not to be playable in realtime, but the conversion process in iTunes should not suffer from that, just take a bit longer (and maybe turn your computer into a sluggish snail during that time).

As I recall, you can export the MIDI file in an audio format just using QuickTime by itself. That'll save you having to delete the file from iTunes later if you didn't really want it in your library.

Erm, why is this a hint? iTunes can play MIDI - was that ever in question? And it can convert songs it can play into MP3 or burn them to CD. Oh, and burning MP3s to CD *also* has to convert them, since the CD itself isn't encoded in MP3 format.

For those of you who are still confused, you can burn/convert AIFFs too!

Well, yes it was. I had previously tried dragging a MIDI file to the the iTunes window. Nothing doing - it just slid right off. Assuming it wouldn't work, i quit right there. It wasn't until i read this thread that i persisted enough to drag the file to iTunes' dock location. Matter of fact, i had given up on playing MIDI on the Mac until i could find some sort of 'jukebox' program... iTunes has lots of capabilities that it doesn't let on about, somewhat like the old saw about hiding your lamp under a basket.
