I just did an installation of Panther over my old system and soon realised that I could not write "a." All other characters worked. Even Shift-A worked. I could not even work around it by first hitting caps lock and then Shift-A.
It took me some time before I realised that there was a conflict with the nifty little app Synergy. I just deselected Synergy among the programs that start when I login, and now it's fine. I know there is a later version of Synergy out since before New Year's Eve, but I haven't tried it yet. Anyway, I hope this saves people with the same problem some time.
