If you have been using Kristfer Widholm's excellent AppleJack utility and wonder why your custom login and Address Book picture keeps disappearing, read on.
Apple, in a brief moment of non-clarity, decided a good location for custom login pictures (the ones you paste in because the defaults are too cutesy) was /Library/Caches. Unfortunately one of AppleJack's missions is do delete cache files, and everything in that directory goes bye-bye.
The workaround is to stick your custom login picture under /Library/User Pictures where Apple keeps its defaults. None of the category folders seemed appropriate so I created a 'People' folder and stuck my picture in there. It now appears along with the cutesy pictures in the Accounts preference pane.
Now my login picture is AppleJack-proof.
